This is wonderful. I love that both men look away from each other, that Sherlock is looking toward his crime scene and John is on full "John Watson BAMF" alert. Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing your work with us! 'sky'

How do you capture their likenesses so perfectly?

Well...I draw a lot and you know what they say about practice. But as far as tips or tricks...take a lot of measurements when you draw. Where does the corner of the eye line up in relation to everything else on the face, etc etc. My initial drawings have a lot of vertical and horizontal lines on them so I know I'm getting placement and size right.

Thank you!
The only way I seem to be able to draw portraits right is when I use the grid system, but it feels so much like cheating. What are your thoughts about that?

Well...i guess to elaborate. I think cheating is harsh word for it. You are still freehanding it. It's a nice tool for beginning because it teaches you how to look at a space and draw what you see in the simplified format of angles and negative space. Essentially you are doing the same thing you would do without a grid but over and over in smaller more manageable spaces. So no. It's not cheating, it's just simplified. I never liked using them, but if you do but want to ween off of them then try making your grid squares larger and larger as you get more comfortable with each size. Eventually you'll be without one.

That's a good idea. Thank you very much for the advice!

Personally I enjoy the freehand of really getting in there and figuring it out, but it is totally up to you!! If you enjoy using a grid then go for it sister.

Holy dang. That's really cool. I wish they'd start an episode like this, and slowly go from the artwork to the people.
Have you seen the second season yet? Irene Adler makes her appearance, and it's worth every moment of obsessed giggling amazingness. Even if you're not prone to giggling, just trust me. It's hilarious, and giggles will be had by all.
