One more non-Halloween image before I get fully into the season. This image of Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (among the sexiest of female super-heroines in my book
Recently, Marvel Comics caused a bit of controversy with the alternate cover for their upcoming Spider-Woman #1: www.cbr.com/milo-manaras-spide…
I saw a youtube video, however, that answers the so-called controversy the cover caused: youtu.be/CB6TiRJNI-Q
For my own two bits:
I tend to agree with the video commenter; Spider-themed characters tend to have certain 'iconic' poses, i.e. very 'crawling spider-like'. Spider-Man has been drawn in the exact same poses, but caused no problem because he was a male (and, like all super-heroes, he has an idealized 'perfect' body [thin and wirery, but still muscular
That being said... what exactly did Marvel THINK would happen by asking Milo Manara, famously known for his nudes and erotica, to draw a super-heroine for them? Is there any worse combination of artist than an Italian Erotica illustrator to ask to do this?
Also, as I mentioned in a reply below, perviness is in the eye of the beholder (mostly ). I remember when I was young and made the realization that most female super-heroines were essentially nude with body paint ^_^
And then there are times when the comic itself was subtly or overtly naughty, like in this image where I SWEAR I see comic-code approved nipples casting some long shadows : bayimg.com/HAanpAaGn
Or the heavy bondage themes in the early issues, which I mentioned in an earlier image:

I may do another of her soon, since I picked up another 'Spider-Woman Cosplay' outfit (this one is pretty much body paint only.....kind of like how she was often drew in the comics in the old days ^_^).

And yeah that pretty much is how her costume should look!

Thanks
"Truth" to tell, though; the figure isn't actually wearing a costume, I just painted the body red (although I am using a bodysuit for the arms and legs ).
Because I'm an idiot and an impulse purchaser, I recently picked up yet another 'Spider-Woman' outfit, which I'll probably be using soon (it looks much more like an outfit instead of a 'body hugging stocking', though): www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?V…

I can't remember exactly when, but I do remember the water shed realization the very young me had one day, when I stopped seeing super-hero women as wearing costumes, and realized they were just nipple-less nudes in body paint
That being said, in at least one early issue of Spider-Woman you can clearly see nipples casting a shadow (Spider-Woman Issue 3, 1978): postimg.org/image/7zfz46j9l/
and even recently, if the artist has a big enough 'appreciation' of the female form, he will still draw super-women as body painted nudes (Frank Cho, Hulk #9, 2008): postimg.org/image/5mg07avxr/

But, yeah, there's a reason I avoid Marvel AND DC's books (and have for the last 20+ years).
While I like eye candy as much as the next butt-scratching gorilla, I prefer that it complement a well-made (or, at least, creatively molded/iced) 'cake'.
Noone seems to want to 'Mx(yzptlk)' things up anymore (although I enjoyed the classic stories where they did).
I'll stick with books like Archie's Madhouse and series like Daria and Downtown until the 'Big Boys' get out of their patriarchal/misogynistic torture porn 'phase' (with 'Squirrel Girl = Mary Sue' novelty candle).
Creativity is not a 'sin', ya corporate lugnuts!!

For myself, I still read Marvel books, but since the whole "New 52" fiasco I have dropped DC totally (although before that the only series I read were the Excellent 'Green Lantern' books).
It remains to be seen how good the Spider-Woman comic will be, all of this 'controversy' is just about the cover, not the content of the book itself.
BTW: Nice twist on the Spider-Man theme, and I fully agree with you about Squirrel Girl being a "Mary Sue"

It seems only in America would we cause a big fuss about this, yet in the comic "Thunderbolts" there are depicted a number of VERY bloody deaths, and no one bats an eye over it (the standard Violence is okay, but Sex is a Big No No).

I think that most of america is still not open to sex, or at least to a certain way of looking at sex. What Manara is just an example, there are many others in which it is shouted to the scandal, but in the end there was nothing so outrageous.
Months I was talking with a friend about the participation to the Oscar for the film "La grande bellezza", and I said he would win because there were a lot of scenes with beautiful half-naked, in particular so Sabrina Ferilli. And so it was.

I'm sure that if someone dedicated themselves to it, they would probably find MANY times that ol' Pete has been in just as 'provocative' poses as this (I'm sure if I dug up my old Tod McFarlane comics I could find a dozen or so).
That being said, perviness is in the eye of the beholder (mostly ). I remember when I was young and made the realization that most female super-heroines were essentially nude with body paint ^_^

Dude, you don't even need to go that far back. There's a cover by J. Scott Campbell that matches up Spider-Man's ass PERFECTLY when it's superimposed on that Spider-Woman cover.
As an added bonus, Spider-Man is making that pose on a giant sticky ball of webbing that has a bunch of goons wrapped up in it.
"That being said, perviness is in the eye of the beholder (mostly ). I remember when I was young and made the realization that most female super-heroines were essentially nude with body paint ^_^"
To be fair, so are most of the dude heroes. To be COMPLETELY fair though, most of said dudes also wear capes which tend to cover them up a fair bit. Still though, pretty much every superhero who doesn't wear armor looks like they just applied body paint to themselves and called it a week.
