This is a really nice turtle study. I love the head details. I own a wood turtle myself. He's always fun to look at for sketch works like these. Do you do your research online? ..or by books or zoo visits? Just curious.

I tend to find interesting images online and then I break the animal or insect etc down to its basic shapes to understand the design language. Once I do that I do a detail pass to learn about the surface or materials of the animal in question and lastly I do a highlight pass to practice lighting the animal's forms. I kill three birds with one stone if done correctly and learn quite a bit about the animal in the process. Anywhoot I really think going out and drawing animals from a one on one interaction level is always best.
