No, by all means, it’s a compliment. I love characters that have a bit of mystery to them. It’s a refreshing take on the “I’m not normal” trope that seems to run rampant these days. He’s very well thought out, and I adore the comics he’s in.

Thank you, though admittedly I'm cheating a bit since Cinder is so young. No one really expects a baby to be a fully fleshed character, so I get to play around quite a bit.
But I think I know what you mean. I'd say a large problem with people wanting to make their character someone special is that they usually just state “My character is different” on a character sheet or similar. I really wanted to introduce Cinder through actions and story; like showing him turn into a ball of flames rather than just telling people that he can do that.

It admittedly helps that he’s so damn cute that it makes it hard to fault the guy for magical shenanigans. It also helps that the way you integrate him into others stories such as Lightning Bliss’ and Aeon of Dreams’ isn’t done in an invasive matter. Unlike how others shamelessly self-insert themselves as an integral part of another character’s backstory.

I actually used to be really nervous about having him interact with other oc's (still get moments like that whenever I come out with a new idea), but Bliss kept telling me it's alright, and I want to trust her.
Still, I do insist on a small disclaimer under every comic; I'd rather take down a page and go back to the drawing board than have a comic page that screws up someone else's oc somehow.

Oh no, Bliss loves it wholeheartedly. Aeon too. They keep gushing about how adorable it is. Hell, we were talking about it in GoldenFox's stream awhile back.

There's actually been a few who mentioned that they were directed here by a stream.. I've been thinking I should look it up and find out what on earth people have been talking about.

This really left me speechless... I actually started crying while watching it.
I know I get a lot of people saying they like my comics or my oc, but it's a completely different feeling to actually hear someone talking about it.
Thank you.

Awwwww, well it’s true. Bliss adores it and so does Aeon. Every time you feature those two they fawn over it all day. Heh. Fawn.

I'm kind of curious now that I think about it. Has anyone actually managed to pronounce his real name?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-28 16:12:11 +0000 UTC]
Well, I don't think I've actually heard anyone try to pronounce it, but based on experience, I'd think the answer is no. xD
Especially the Finnish "u" is difficult for people speaking other languages to get right... but those who know Swedish, German, Estonian or Japanese should be able to pronounce it, or at lest come pretty close.

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-28 16:21:59 +0000 UTC]
The way I’ve been pronouncing it is Too-Kuh-Val-Key-uh. Knowing my character he’d probably just call him Tuka for short if he didn’t know Cinder was what he went by. Either that or Squirt.

Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-28 17:43:33 +0000 UTC]
Tuhka translates to ash or cinder, so I figured it was the most logical nickname. Well, that and the will-o-wisping. But Tuka sounds really cute!
Let's see... the "a"s are like in "car", and the "e" is like in "red". Except Finnish vowels are all short unless there's two of them (aa, ee).
And I have no idea how to explain "u" xD

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-28 18:36:13 +0000 UTC]
According to what I’ve read on Finnish Phonetics, the “u” is typically pronounced like the English “oo” like in “book.” But there could very well be another rule I haven’t checked that makes it sound otherwise. But yeah. Given how a lot of names in the US typically have two syllables and Solar isn’t exactly the most complicated when it comes to wordplay, he’d probably just shorten it to Tuka.

Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-28 18:51:50 +0000 UTC]
I should also say that Tuhkavalkea is a bit of a mouthful even for a finn, so I when talking about him I usually shorten it to Tuhkaporo, which just rolls of the tongue better

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-28 19:05:13 +0000 UTC]
Less syllables will almost always make things roll off the tongue better in my experience. Plus Tuhkaporo almost has a completely different vibe to it.

Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-29 07:36:57 +0000 UTC]
It does. It means something completely different too.
If you're interested:
tuhka - ash, cinder
poro - reindeer
valkea - fire (very old), white

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-29 09:55:39 +0000 UTC]
Well, I’ll admit that Tuhkavalkea has a better ring to it than Tuhkatulia.

Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-30 07:31:10 +0000 UTC]
And there are a lot of natural fire phenomena that have "valkea" in their names. Those were what inspired me to use it in Cinder's name.

It’s funny. AshFire almost seems like a pony name in and of itself.
I now declare the Finnish language as the official language of Deerfolk.

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-30 17:51:22 +0000 UTC]
They might. Or they might not. The way I see it, Deer are the pony equivalent of elves. Graceful, mysterious, and typically standout. So having them speak a different language makes sense in my opinion. Of course, that’s for others to interpret as is.

Cindertale In reply to SolarFlare-Kage [2018-08-31 11:49:41 +0000 UTC]
The comics would agree with you, it seems.
Changing the subject a bit, did you know that Tolkien was inspired be Swedish and Finnish languages (among other) when he wrote his elven languages? Because you talking about deer and elves and Finnish is surprisingly on point

SolarFlare-Kage In reply to Cindertale [2018-08-31 12:49:52 +0000 UTC]
That’s actually why I was suggesting it. Tbh I was first introduced to the idea from a really good fanfic I read a few years back. Ever since then it’s been a headcanon I agreed with. And if the comics say so, then I’m definitely onboard.

"Book" might be a good example. Another might be "full".
Actually, this is going to be easier if I just dig out someone going through the alphabet, so here's a link (the u is at about the 4 min mark).

Ahh, that’s how I imagined it’d be pronounced. The T almost sounds as though it’s a very quick Th, which I suppose makes sense. Also helps to add to the mystery of the character in the sense of “not quite that way, more like this.” Which is all the more reason that another character might give him a nickname.

The pronauncination is difficult to explain, because “u” in Finnish sounds very different to the “u” in English. It's kind of like the “o” in “foot”, but much shorter. The “k” is pretty sharp. “A” is pronaunced more like “ah”, and “e” would be similar to the “e” in “bed”.
Does any of that make any sense? xD

Everyone always seem amazed or appreciative of traditional art. For my part, though, it's the only way I know how to draw... I'm horrible with digital methods! xD

Pristine1281 In reply to Cindertale [2018-05-09 05:10:10 +0000 UTC]
Hey I am okay with Digital methods. Granted it's not easy. One thing I took from my fine art skills that helped me with digital work was my experience in Blind Line Drawings. In both High school and college I had to do blind drawings where I looked at the subject matter and draw it without looking at what I am drawing. I am so use to looking down at my artwork that when I started doing digital artwork, I soon realized that it was weird to not look at my hands as I drew, since I was looking at a computer screen instead.
