As a Grey Warden, he walks by the path of darkness and his heart can get as dark as the creatures he faces.
The Grey Wardens are a group of pragmatic clerical knights/priest/inquisitors who tries to achieve greater good by any means necessaries.
Their hands are dirty.
He struggles to not ultimately fall for the evil alignment.
As we know: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Being good keeps him safe. Being neutral reveals his true potential. Being evil makes him lose everything.
