history: hiro grew up on a small fishing island off the coast of mainland japan. various gangs of stray cats live on the island, and hiro belonged to one of the largest and strongest gangs, controlled by one powerful cat. his kind and forgiving nature did not fit in with the rest of the gang cats, and caused many scenes of conflict between him and other gang cats. eventually he was cast out of the gang, after a dispute with a high-ranking male cat, as hiro tried to protect a young female from him.

although the island is small and isolated, it has a rich history, which often attracted historians and scholars. one of the latter, an elderly english scholar, had moved to the island to live out his remaining years and uncover as much local history as he could, hoping to publish one last book before his death. hiro had been visiting and accepting food from this scholar for a while, so when he was cast out of the gang, he moved in with the scholar, who tied the traditional red piece of cloth around hiro's neck, mirroring the cats in ancient japanese art.

the gang cats grudgingly accepted pet animals, as they all belonged to the island, even the fisherman's cats, who lived on boats and came and went as they pleased, caused no trouble with the gangs as they had all been born on the island, and had similar morals and values. so hiro was almost forgotten by the gangs as his new quiet life with the scholar had a low impact on them. however, when syko arrived, both she and hiro were viciously thrust back into the harsh scrutiny and judgment of the gangs.

personality: hiro is almost the complete opposite of his mate, syko. he is mellow and quietly optimistic, with a deep intelligence. he is affectionate and giving, and is not afraid of openly displaying how much he cares for others. he possesses a soft sense of self confidence that is reassuring rather than overbearing. however, he can be very stubborn when it comes to morals, and his pride will often force him to make bad decisions in stressful situations. he is not nescassarily overly 'macho' but would sacrifice himself to save another's life without thinking about it, even if there was a chance they could both be saved. this conflicts with syko's nature, as she is used to taking care of herself and not worrying about others.
