When Thadd was young, his parents chose to uproot him from their home in Viridian City and move to Issho right before he was ready to enter 4th grade. The massive change at such an unstable time ended up triggering a new level of severity in Thadd's previously mild anxiety and ADHD. All this coupled with a new school, and his grades plummeted. Unaware that their son was struggling for reasons besides "moving and new schools are hard", Thadd's parents became harder on him, believing that intense discipline was the answer.

Thadd always preferred pokemon training to doing literally anything else, because it didn't require the sort of repetitive memory tasks that school did and so he was really very good at it. His parents, however, began to think of it as a distraction. Initially they refused to let him go on his pokemon journey at 10 until he improved his grades. After another year of ruthless dedication, despite bringing his grades up notably, Thadd's parents instead concluded that pokemon were, in fact, the problem, and banned him from his pokemon journey altogether in favor of him completing school.

Thadd graduated roughly around the same time that the pokemon appeared in the sky. In the chaos of that day he encountered his first pokemon, and the two of them survived together during the aftermath. During this time, the inner regions of Issho were in chaos and a little bit of a wild west, and Thadd was willing to beat up just about anyone for anyone as long as he could keep his pokemon fed. During this time he was briefly taken in to the darker interpretations of Zephyr philosophy and reconnected with some of his old highschool anger as the stress of the situation made him lose control of his ADHD again for a while. During this time he was very aggressive towards any human beings except some extremist Zephyrs he had come to trust.

Eventually Thadd came to grips with reality and understood that these extremists were pushing things to a level that was going to hurt pokemon as well as people, and he ended up walking away.

Thadd eventually made it home to his parents to confirm everyone was safe. They reacted to his new pokemon companion with hesitant acceptance, but went on to tell Thadd that if he wanted them to pay for his college education, he was not allowed to fight, train, or engage in any sort of competition with pokemon.

Thadd left home the next day with his pokemon at his side, and never looked back. He joined the Pokemon League with the hopes of finding a family that would actually support his goals, and is dedicated to training with Pokemon to better understand them.
