Because of how things inevitably end up for Beastkin outside of the Keasu Valley, there is a prevalent sense of concern that is ever present over the head of every free person. The aura of fear extends far beyond the sight of the cities and largest towns.
This creates a double edged sword. They can't create a settlement to good for themselves as it is sure to draw the eyes of their oppressors in time, never mind how bad of an idea it is to live in an already established settlement. But if they try to make a living in a place that isn't nearly as reputable, the kind of shady place where under the table dealings are the norm and even a point of pride, where no one's word is worth the breath, someone would absolutely sell them out for one reason or another, for crumbs off the bread.
Every Beastkin outside of the valley lives with some measure of fear, but only a few take steps to be ready. Spending every day having to look over your shoulder will almost certainly have you keeping a blade on you.
After all, the person who travels with a knife up their sleeve is crazy every day but one...
