Description You ever hear the saying that cites are like mazes, or words to that effect? That's what's being said about modern cities. You know, the kind that have some measure of deeper planning?
Can you imagine how it was with the municipalities of yesteryear? A few key buildings go up in a place, like farm houses near a body of water or some inns and rest houses along a trade road or intersection, then a few more to accommodate more people. Give it enough time and it'll get some serious sprawl. Forget maze like, this is labyrinthine.
And why wouldn't it be? When buildings just go up where they please only as they're needed, things can get a little...tangled.
Or at least they are for a non-native. When you live in a place for long enough, or at least spend enough time there, you start to learn where things are and how to get there like the back of your hand. Pretty useful if you've got important business to attend to, or just want to beat ye olde equivalent of rush hour.
On the other hand, if you're completely unfamiliar with the layout of things, because you're, let's say, a novice thief or runaway , one wrong turn means a little more than just being late. Especially if you've run afoul of the law .
That comes with consequences...
