Quite often mistakes or strange names for things are passed through generations.
I know a funny story. One woman, when got married, discovered something strange. Her mother-in-law, when she was baking a whole chicken, was cutting away legs and baking them separately. Intrigued, she asked her why she does that. Mother-in-law answered that her mother was doing so. So, she asked grandmother of her husband and... got the same answer. Luckily for this mystery, great-grandmother of her husband was still living, so she asked her. It came out, that the oldest woman had a really small electric mini-oven. Because of that, chicken with legs wasn't fitting inside.

I for example didn't understand a certain joke. If not German lessons, I'd probably still call express trains "Anzugs"...
