So. A while ago, I decided to rework an ancient concept I had with some angelic characters and turn it into an exercise to work with colors and different skin tones and diversity and stuff. There were also some characters I had been meaning to rework and redesign. It came in the form of me just drawing some different faces and stuff.

I decided to draw their full body outfits too to get a better sense of the characters and their heights. Angelus and Yumi (Angel is the shortest of the group up front, Yumi is last), like with that initial drawing of me drawing faces and practicing color, weren’t initially going to be there until I realized I had room. I didn’t draw anyone’s wings for sake of space. The piece is busy and crowded as it is with everyone there—the wings would probably make it worse. For the most part, everyone’s wings mostly match with their main motif color (the only exceptions are Angelus, who has sparkling iridescent wings that appear to change color; Lyra, who has plain white wings; and Ai, who has lighter pink wings). It came from an old concept of rainbow feathered angels (which was likely influenced by Mermaid Melody). Yumi originally came from that group, but she was the only one I had really drawn or developed which is why her character has stuck.

I love how varied and different everyone looks and how vibrant the colors turned out. I spent a good amount of time building up and increasing the vibrancy of certain colors so the designs wouldn’t look too flat, and it pushed me to use colors I don’t use often or don’t really like using (such as orange and yellow. I do use both from time to time, but I don’t like focusing a palette on them.
