Description
A friend asked me to whip this up quickly for him, so i figured i might as well post it. It is the absolute basics of photoshop. This includes how to make layers, use the multiply function and opacity. Really this is nothing intense, but i think it might prove useful to someone out there. Oh yes, it also explains afew shortcuts that prove VERY useful. I don't claim to be a pro in this by any means, but these are simply how i manage to draw using this program. I'm sure there are other methods that work just as well. This tutorial is meant for Photoshop, but opencanvas has similar function. I recammend the "spoon pen" with the latter program.
Forgive me for the lack of a decent drawing to go with this. This really was a 10 min job that i had no intention of posting here.
enjoy!

my tutorial should help you with layers... basicially picture a layer as a clear piece of paper. If you draw on the bottomost sheet, you can see everything on the topmost since it is clear. So you can draw on every sheet and when you look at it from the top, you see a combined image of every sheet. now if you mess up one of those sheets, you can delete it without ruining the rest of the image. Then, all you have to do is fix that one layer instead of the entire drawing. see? that's how it works.

Cool. While much of this was known to me, i hadn't thought to use a multiplied layer for shadows before... Just shows that with Photoshop, there is alwas something new to learn (and not always the complex stuff either).
Must at some stage complile a list of all the known keyboard shortcuts for photoshop.. you come across them here and there, but I've never seen them all in one place for easy reference...

i shouldve made it clearer but i was running out of room XD
On the shading layer, set it to multiply... basically the same thing you did to the lineart layer.
Then obtain a grey color... somewhere in the midrange. And go over all of the colors where you wish the shadow to be. Because of the multiply, it will be lighter for the light colors and darker for the dark ones, in otherwords, perfect for shading over anything without doing each color seperately.
hope that is a bit clearer

Woot, very interesting. I've never tried just free drawing in photoshop, i usually just scan and color it in. Kinda hard to draw with a mouse, but I know there's a lot of people out there who can, im just not one of them. hahah. but I should give it a shot using this, i like the whole light lines then refining over it with a second sketch. Isn't photoshop awesome??

actually, this will work with stuff you hand draw and scan in. all you need to do is up the contrast to make the lines darker and it will work. Half the stuff in my gallery was my pre-tablet days, and you can work wonders with a mouse

up the contrast huh? humm Iβve never really tried my hand at inking, I mostly leave it up to my best bud, she's like a amazing inker, I don't know how she does it. But I should give it a shot. Yeah Iβve seen some really fantastic mouse drawings, I just wish tablets weren't so expensive. I know some of them aren't too bad, but woo...still a bit pricey.
I'm also still trying to decide if I like my lines really clean or not, only time shall tell. But I should try cleaning up a sketch like that sometime. Hahha, might prove interesting.
You know whatβs funny I always kinda felt if I got a tablet, Iβd have to like...learn to color on the computer all over again you know? Iβve heard itβs a lot easier, is it?

the tablet has it's own learning curve. There were times i wanted to toss mine out of a window and that i'd never get the hang of it. Also i find there is a totally different look that the tablet can't duplicate from a hand drawn piece. They are really two different worlds, and i find you can't compare the two at all. I love my tablet.. but it honestly makes me lazy... VERY lazy, since my hand drawn pieces are far more expressive and seem to come out better.
