Description
Here we have some more character art from my story, "Dragon Dreams." This is Stolvir, one of my favorites (although most of my characters are favorites). I'm still getting the hang of doing digital art, so it's not the most polished piece, but it's good for an overall impression of what he looks like, more or less. Hopefully my dragon drawings keep improving. There's no background because I'm lazy and it probably would look terrible anyway, so he's just gonna float there.I'm pretty happy with it overall, though! Please enjoy and feel free to comment/critique and let me know what you think. I'll be doing more visual art when I can, and I would love to do more characters. Let me know in the comments if there's anyone in particular you'd like to see me do next!
If you haven't read about Stolvir yet, you can find Dragon Dreams here !
Materials:
Autodesk SketchBook software
Wacom Intuos Draw tablet
~5 hours (estimate, but I'm still slow)
Here is my process for making the drawing:

Nice work Art takes its time for sure! You do have a nice grasp of their forms already
Do try to add some little backgrounds, even if it is just a simple field or a wall of sorts. It really forces you to take the space and lighting into consideration. It does make it all a bit more difficult, but it surely pays in the long run Also, if I recall correctly, you can set randomized opacity/size and spacing for your brushes. Truly make use of it! A lot of traditional painting is about letting the bristles of the brush jump at random to create vegetation or irregular colours, which can work great for suggesting the presence of scales too. (See: www.sketchbook.com/help/knowle… )

Thanks for the comment! I will try harder on backgrounds in the future. I recently upgraded to the pro version of Sketchbook so now I can use those random brush variations you talked about! Great tip for leaves and scales. And I know what you mean about physical brushes in traditional painting! I've done traditional painting quite a bit longer than digital, and those irregularities are hard to translate to the computer screen. That's definitely something I can work on.

Randomized settings help a lot with that I would also really recommend you to try out Verve-painter if you like more traditionalish media. It has a horrible UI and seems to just be someone's pet-project, but it has quite a cool brush system that simulates fluids... just super tricky to work with it. But hey it's free.
Krita is also a very solid digital painting application, and with it being open source it sometimes surprises me why not more people use it.
But hey usually the UI/simplicity in use is what resonates the most with artists Verve does a particular awful job at that... it's fluid-sim notwhithstanding haha.

For Verve I'd look up some vids on youtube... what some people do with it is really cool www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Kv8B… and looking at them kinda gives you an impression what you need to do. Takes a bit of getting used to though!

Looks nice, but let me tell you something about backgrounds. It doesn`t matter how crappy they are, they just get points for participating. Just be sure that the environment looks sort of like somethign reasonable for the foucs, that thing in the center with tons of detail and effort. As long as that happens, it should look good.
Granted, I have about the same skill as you at drawing and that might just be an opinion. Take it or leave it. I don`t mind.

Hey, thanks for the comment! I'll be sure to try out more backgrounds in the future. I'm sure I'll find some techniques that work
