Due to movies like TOPGUN and the Blue Angel flight demonstration team some people might think this is how we always fly. Not the case there is nothing tactical in this formation it looks great for photos and is entertaining to civilians but in actual missions these 4 aircraft will be miles apart and still able to cover one another. Fire a SAM into this type of formation 4 fighters go down in a combat spread that same SAM might get lucky and might take out one fighter.

In a situation where an enemy or potential enemy aircraft came onto this situation flying wingtip to wingtip limits what fighters can do spread out that does not happen. All naval aviators flying jets can fly in this formation its just not done during actual combat ops.
