No, I haven't seen "Golden Compass."The compass will be part of my home page for my new website.
Done entirely in Photoshop CS3 (which is awesome).

Not sure. I'll guess 4-5 hours. Lots of tweaking with layers.

I'm working on a similar thing in CS2.
I'm just starting out on making things from a blank canvas in Photoshop -
may I ask for some advice? Like, how did you color it in so well?

Hi there,
First I looked for some photo references so I could guesstimate a good palette of colors. The compass has many many layers, so first start with a base color then add layers to that. My best advice is don't over think it. Though this is a gold compass, a lot of the colors are anything but gold: browns, oranges, black, red, yellows, white. To make something look metallic and reflective, you have to add contrasting colors and don't let yourself blur them together. I also played around with changing the layer properties.
Link me to your new piece when you're done working on it, I'd love to see it!

I'm not sure how to explain it, but..
When I make layers of color, should each layer be different colors not colored in completely?
Er.. How do I know which colors to put where? I'm sorry if I don't make sense, but I'm just not sure how to go about coloring.

Well there's really no right way to do it, I just love layers. Each layer is different from the one below it. I make a new layer for each component and each change, so that later if I want to fix something, I can narrow it down to a layer.
The only advice I can really give you is to just play around and see what works for you.
