Cool piece, nice framing with the tower in the foreground as well.
Regarding the two versions: I think the light background gives a greater sense of space and floating. However the lighting 'pops' more on the dark one. The higher contrast makes for a greater of drama, and also separates the character from the background more.

Yeah I even considered pointing all of the objects at her but thought it would be too on the nose.
But back on track. Would you say that it was the right decision to make it lighter ? Because it did kinda break some things like the mouse and it's laser, even though it solved the problem of recognition from a far if that even was a problem.

TBH, I personally prefer the dark background, as I think it pops a bit better. But that's personal preference. Reality is it's a bit six of one, half a dozen of the other regards using a light of dark background. Depends on what you're going for.
That being said: if you're going to change the background values, you probably want to re-draw some of the foreground objects. Prime example is the mouse laser, which appears overly dark against the light background. Don't know what you're process is, but I know I always rough in the background tones of a pic before starting to render the subject so I know what I'm balancing against (among other things, such as defining the light sources).

Yeah, you're right. I should have re rendered it a bit or at least put a few adjustment filters on it after I changed to light. Or you know... I shouldn't have changed it.
I have a bit of a "Oh s**t I forgot the background" sindrome .
And really didn't have a good enough plan for the background.
The picture was also a merged down semi finished PNG by the time I decided to make a background change so...

I think they're both fine in its own, just have different vibes. With the light on the psychic power seems like a natural thing in their everyday life.
The dark one has a more mystic and a little infiltrating feel. Neither of them has a negative influence on the figures/objects though.
I think it's more a matter of taste.

I did want to make it feel less extraordinary or maybe I'm just justifying a done decision. Main thing I was concerned about was if it reads well from a distance. The lighter one had more contrast. But if you say that neither interferes with the character and things, then I guess I was just paranoid

Well then you reached exactly the result you were going for .
I feel like when one spend time on a picture there is often this feel of imperfection, even though it felt right at first.
In the end the picture weirds you out wholly and you're not sure if it was better the way before you changed it.
Then there is the need for another person to look over it to give you clarification. Sigh.. the fate of an critical artist?

Here is a older version that still has a darker background.I decided to erase it and replace it with something lighter because it looked bad from a distance. Feedback on wich one is better and why would be appreciated.As if anybody would gives feedback on this site.
