I really just re-textured the items. But to do that you have to use the Items GUI (the one that had ALL the Minecraft items in one big PNG file before 1.5)
I use GIMP to edit the textures

It isn't really that hard, but it takes time in both creating screenshots (which I have been doing) and animations (which I have yet to start on)
