Best known for his long association with Hammer Films and his roles as Doctor Frankenstein and Professor Van Helsing. He also appeared frequently in Horror films made by other companies.

He is also famous for his role as Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars (1977). He was one of the few people involved in making the film that believed it would be a major success. Cushing stated on more than one occasion that he was originally offered the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi but could not accept the larger role because of other film commitments so he accepted the role of Tarkin.

Through his long career he worked with talents as diverse as Laurel & Hardy and Laurence Olivier. He appeared frequently on screen with his good friend Christopher Lee.

He was a life long fan of Sherlock Holmes and played the famed consulting detective in three different productions. He also played "Doctor Who" in the two Dalek films made in the 1960s.

In 1989 Peter Cushing was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to the British film industry. I think he should have been Knighted.
