Description
"We set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved... But not for me.""You don't mean that. You can't leave."
"The last pages are for you, Sam."
This part always gets to me. When I was younger, I could never understand why this ending had to happen!! But I understand better now and it hurts even more.
Anyways, I started this ages ago...can't even remember when. I just found it in my art folder and was like...I don't think I've submitted that yet???

Aww, this is lovely! I love the way you did the hair.
And yeah, the ending makes me bawl, too... I tear up whenever I listen to "Into the West"!

Thanks so much!
And oh man, me too!! I just love that song. She has such a powerful voice and the lyrics just...ugh...they hurt, but I sure do love them.

To cheer you up, some years later... I don't remember exactly how many, Sam, also having been a ring bearer, gets to sail from the Grey Havens and be with Frodo and Gandalf and all the elves.
Another thing is that The Lord of the Rings is a translation of the book mentioned in the films, it's called The Red Book, and things can get lost or changed in translation, and especially with probably many many hands having penned the original book itself that we don't really know how true of a history it is. It is sad to me how much the movies changed without any need, time was no issue, they just made weird changes... poor Frodo... he really got defamed, so did Merry and Pippin, and well... I could go on... but it can also be seen as just another layer of the obscuring of the "true story" the story The Red Book itself probably did not even acurately portray. (Tolkien was a historian and a translator and he came up with this idea of The Red Book as a lost history that he translated into The Lord of the Rings)

That is brilliant. I read the books so long ago when I was far too young to really remember. But man...it's already majorly impressive on its own, but the more I hear about it the more I am astounded by how intricate the story is. Thanks for that bit of info! I think I need to read the books all over again very soon!

L. Frank Baum, who wrote "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" about 50 yrs. before Tolkien penned The Hobbit came up with the idea for his stories that he got them from Dorothy by telegraph.
And Founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, when questioned about whether or not he would like his world of magical spirits to actually exist, replied he thinks they do exist.
Yes, there is kind of a cool slightly hidden history behind authors and some of the stories they create around their stories.
I love it!
I actually took a crack at writing a version of just a couple scenes near the end of ROTK (I stupidly wrote Rivendell instead of the Houses of Healing, but I consider it a minor mistake) that I thought was even less dramatized than Tolkien's version... guess I was digging around for an even more plausible story, and also it always fascinated me the way Frodo reacts, or doesn't react when he wakes up in the "houses of healing"

Aah my heart! I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to make it through this part without tearing up. ;_; You've recreated this touching scene beautifully. I love how even though neither of their faces are completely visible, the emotions shine through as clear as day.
