Description On November 14, 1965 I rode a Burlington fan trip behind Mikado 4960. They put us in the hole for everything and here near Lee we all piled out to get a shot of the Zephyr approaching from the west. People all over the place. I'm amazed that I never heard of anyone getting killed on one of these trips.

Is it the CZ or on of the millions of others that the Burlington ran?

Well lessee... can you figure it out? It's an eastbound and it's about noon. I could dig out my official guide but it's getting late. This is pre-Amtrak so it might even be on time!

Not millions but certainly dozens.

What a great angle. At first glance it looked like single track head on, no hole. So I just HAD to look more closely. Yes, it's amazing nobody got crunched, but one would hope that rail fans are very aware of the danger.

I'm sure the engineers were as nervous as all get-out when things like this went down.

Sweet. The GCR did a similar-type photo op with #18 and a UP diesel (forget the # and make) at Phoenix Union Station after they got the line up and running again (I think the first year back in service). Love the "past and present" aspect, especially now that in this picture its "past and past".

Neat pic in the link too. I think this one is better, it seems more in focus. Plus I like the F unit.

Maybe we can believe that people who rode on the Q's fantrips tended to have a healthy respect for railroad safety...

Trust me... the ratio of stupidity back then was pretty much the same as today. I think the difference was back then we tended to yell at each other... a LOT.
