Description
Candian National steam engine #6218 backs down under 12th Street (Roosevelt Road) into Chicago's Dearborn Street Station to pick up a fan trip to South Bend, Indiana. It was a lousy day for pictures but a great ride behind a beautiful piece of machinery. This is a companion shot to [link]

Even though it was alousy day for pics, she still looks like they shined her up. I like the rear view for something different.

Interesting to see a vandy tender loaded with coal. Here on the west coast, SP only used bunker C for fuel. Nice!

Very interesting pic as always! Is this an oil fired engine by any chance? The tender would suggest that at least. Strangely enough, when I saw the thumbnail for the first time, I thought it would be a fireless engine (I hope I translated that correctly), but the title made that unlikely. The huge tender sorta looks like a boiler when not in full view

It was coal fired. If you look you can see the coal piled to a peak.
You did translate it right... engines running on compressed air or steam loaded from a stationary plant were called fireless. They were often used as switchers around factories that had steam boilers for heat or manufacturing... sometimes electric power generating stations.

The ironic thing about Vanderbilt tenders is that the Vanderbilt railroads didn't use them...

Is this a true Vanderbilt? I was going to title it "Vanderbilt" but I wasn't sure and I didn't take the time to look it up.

I'm not sure if there's a difference. From what I know, I thought all tenders with cylindrical water tanks were classified as Vanderbilts, but I'm not an authority on the subject.

I've done a little internet research. From a couple of web pages this does appear to be a Vanderbilt.

Actually there are enough clues spread through my Artist's Comments that you should be able to get it within a couple of years.
