Description I went out today to try and get a shot of an Iowa, Chicago & Eastern engine before they all get dispersed into the CP but it started to rain... and then it poured. But before I got soaked I caught this CN SD70 southbound on the old J-rails at Spaulding crossing with the Metra Milwaukee West Line.

Note the camera in the conductors window. This train is about 100 ft away from a grade crossing without gates in a "No Horns" community.

There's something I don't have around here - even though, in a distant past, there were a couple of two of these crossings.

I think you'll have lots of time to get a picture of an IC&E engine, CP barely seems to have taken over their system and I rarely see CP engines on the DM&E/IC&E line near where I live.

The time before this (missed the shot) there was a CP unit in the lead with IC&E behind.

What kind of diesel was the CP unit? Because we occasionally get the CP SD40-2's on our line.

This is an SD70. I do have an SD40 pix: [link]

Note my main journal contains links to a lot of web roster info.

Every time we drove over a railroad crossing my grandfather would always say:
"Railroad Crossing, look out for the cars
Can you spell that without any "R"s?"

Grandpa would just crack me up every time with that - even though I knew the answer since I was five. Must have been in the way he said it. Don't know why I thought of that when I saw this photo.

Speaking of 'that', that community is going to have a sad awakening some day when the inevitable incident occurs. But I know how it is in the western suburbs of Chicago, I lived in one farther south for several years. NIMBYism was invented in the western suburbs, along with the practice of moving in next to small airfields that had been there since around Wilbur & Orville's time, knowing it was there, then complaining about the aircraft noise and getting the airfield shut down. I do not carry kind thoughts in my heart for those people.

I also lived in another community with a volunteer fire department and some people wanted them to stop sounding the fire siren at night. Fortunately someone grew some real fast and told the complainers straight up what he thought of their request.

I really think the NIMBYism is getting worse.

I loved sleeping where I could hear the trains. Still do. Last night this train [link] came through at 4:30 AM. Whistling for every crossing in town. I think there are 8 of them. Didn't bother me a bit. I heard it and turned over and went back to sleep.

What are the odds of having a crossing with no gates in a community that doesn't allow them to blow the horn?

I have no idea but it's clear that the people making the rules have no idea of the dangers they are creating.

You got that right. It just takes one person not paying attion.

I remember getting soaked on several occasions, but in the end, the photo always seems to have been worth it somehow. The no horns and no gates combination does sound a bit adventurous.
