Description
Many people know about the original CB&Q Denver Zephyr restored and on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. What is less commonly known is that the DZ's siblings were around for quite awhile after they were retired.Cab unit 9901 (the DZ was a fully articulated 3 unit set) was in storage in the dilapidated Galesburg roundhouse in 1964.
This was the first "Roundhouse" photo I ever did. I was so happy with the result it became a theme for me.
Rescanned, "cleaned" and reposted. This was shot on Anscochrome which had a bit of grain even when new. It seems to have gotten worse with the years though the colour has held up pretty well.

What I've heard, is that several of the classic Zephyr trainsets got sold to the Saudi Royal family and served a couple of decades on Saudi railroads. I don't have any confirmation, but they're apparently in storage in Saudi Arabia now, and at the Illinois Rail Museum and a few other places are trying to negotiate a return trip for them. Of course, there's a shovel nose zephyr engine at the National Transportation museum near St. Louis, and Illinois Rail Museum has the Nebraska Zephyr with an E5 on the point.

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, I'm always amazed by what things you have pictures of! The fact that it's a very good picture in it's own right doesn't hurt either, of course.

Thanks! "Photographers privilege" of course. I thew away more than half my slides when I got the box back from processing and over the years I'm gotten rid of another lot. Now I get to share the ones (with a few exceptions) that please me.

They were diesel-electric... just like today's modern engines but with a much smaller prime mover.

the Zephyrs are gorgeous trains....that whole time period had, in my opinion, some of the greatest designs of all time. art deco is easily my favorite style

But that huge... disproportionate in my opinion... was pretty darn ugly.

Thanks Some days you get lucky and the equipment is in just the right place for a shot like this.

Right place at the right time, but more importantly, the right person. The average person wouldn't have seen the beauty in that shot.
