Description
Every time you speak to someone, every time you catch a glance,
a comment,
or even a full-fledged conversation,
just do me a favor,
and focus.
Do their shoulders sag low?
Or do their eyes light up?
Is their lip slanted upwards?
Or are their eyebrows questioning something?
Does their voice change in pitch?
Tonality?
Sound?
Do they shift their position,
avoid eye-contact,
jounce their legs,
or bite their nails?
Just think for a moment,
what it is that this person will do.
Are they putting on a face?
Perhaps intentionally,
perhaps not?
Are they as strong as people think they are?
Are they as weak?
As creepy?
As quiet?
As dominant,
or submissive?
When you speak with someone,
just do me one thing.
Focus, and perceive the truth.

I drew this picture in Geometry class today. I drew it off of the top of my head, not knowing what to expect from my hand. I scanned it, went over it with some lines and whatnot, and posted it.
As I drew the contours, I realized immediately that I would be drawing a girl. As the shape of her face forms, I begin to think "this person seems strong." Hence, the hair was drawn somewhat neat, and the mouth drawn with an upward slant. I drew the nose (which I'm more than a little proud of), and then progressed to the eyes. That's where things began to happen. No matter how many times I erased and tried again, those eyes just felt off, distant, or un-suitable. I drew them as you see them here, and it just felt right. "But wait," I thought, looking at the finished piece. "The eyes... they hold an emptiness to them." It was then that I realized that I'd created a character; a character falsely perceived to be someone she is not, and is truly suffering for it on the inside. I suppose a lesson to be learned here is that you should never make a narrow-minded assumption about someone; you may end up contributing to their problems.
