Description The Lockheed F-22A 'Raptor' is an Air Superiority fighter using the latest generation of Stealth technology.
It entered service with the USAF in 2005, and production is planned to continue until 2011.
The F-22A is capable of exceeding Mach 2, and can also 'Supercruise' (exceed Mach 1 with afterburners off)
The armament is all internally stored to maintain it's Stealth profile, and consists of:
1 x 20mm Vulcan cannon, and a combination of AIM-9 Sidewinders, AIM-120 AMRAAMs and JDAMs or GBU-39s, according to mission.

This example is an F-22A of the 94th Fighter Squadron circa 2008.

Sad thing is about the production. Congress has stopped production.

Ah, it finally happened then... there were a lot of cut-backs in the original contract, but I didn't know it had stopped completely

Yeah. We only have 187 of them. Damn you Congress.
Yeah. Lots of cutbacks. Welcome to America. Land of the Cutbacks and taxes.

Heh, that could be 'welcome to Britain' or France, or Germany... times are hard...

The 'expected production' is 559 in total, of course they are being made now, but what happens in the end depends on Greece, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Japan etc. as they are undecided about buying, or in some cases about quantities - so that 560-ish total could be a lot lower, or even higher... it's a complete lottery right now...

I dunno if Japan is going to buy it. They were looking for the F-22, but the US said no. I do know they were looking into the Super Hornet, Typhoon, and/or the Rafale. Well, you know that Saudi Arabia is going to buy them, because they have more money than they know what to do with it. And plus they keep crashing the airplanes that they have. But yeah. I think Greece was looking into the F-35, I'm not sure. The world is messed up at the moment.

I don't think the F-22 is an option any more for Japan - It seems the production will be stopped and I should think all of them will be kept for 'home use'...

Yeah, Congress passed a bill making the F-22 not for export. There's been a ban on exporting the F-22.

Yes, well there is a policy which means that you don't sell the very best weapons but keep them to yourself...

Oh wait, they just violated that policy by selling the F-16E to the UAE...

You mean the F-15E?
Yeah. We sold them to the Israelis too. They've used them to devastating effect too.

Nope... the F-16E Block 60, the one with all the advanced avionics that is not available in the USA, and only being sold abroad...

Oh. The Block 60. I know! We should use it, but we just upgraded a bunch of the 16s to Block 50/52. Its an interesting looking airplane, with all of those sensors and conformal fuel tanks and what not.

I'm sure it's very advanced, but it does spoil the look imo...

Ah, that was the planned production run time, but it seems to be done now, as in cancelled...
