Description Expansion of the lore of this post  by danibt656  and this other one  by Silas-Coldwine . Following the idea of those, this one is supposed to be a regional free version of the conflicts in the Caucasus and the Balkans.

Factions and entities in 2023
  • Federation of Bierzo-Eonavia: Controlled by Galicia and the Union of Asturias and León in practice, this Federation includes the territories of El Bierzo, Eonavia, Sanabria and La Cabrera. These areas are divided among galicianist, asturleonesist and neutral areas, which had been established after a ceasefire in 1991. Even though galicianist and asturleonesist factions are majoritary, autonomists who propose keeping the country independent while developing a third identity are on the rise.

  • Union of Asturias and León: Despite the peripheral conflicts, the Union is the result of the convergence of groups of all kinds, from groups related to the labor movement, through agrarians, social democrats and conservatives, to more integrist groups that have accepted the use of parliamentary democracy. Although Asturias and León were originally established as different entities, the increase in tensions with Galicia and Castilla favoured the union, being galvanized by the linguistic claim. There is fear of a radicalization of the integrists of the Christian Brothers that would ruin the internal peace, since there are suspicions that they have been recovering links with the Party of God, especially through the meetings that the fundamentalists of the peninsula have held in Covadonga in recent years.

  • Free Province of Santander: Although it calls itself independent, it really has a relationship with the pan-Castilianists, generally calling the territory in many of its communications as the Province of Santander as opposed to the term Cantabria.

  • Basque Occupation Area (Kantabria): Given the tensions that were emerging in the north of Castile, Euskadi chose to occupy the eastern towns in Cantabria when the RFC takes up arms. Despite the conflict to the west, since a truce was signed between Castilla and the RFC, Euskadi has been using these territories as a vacation area for the population of Greater Bilbao. Integration is already ongoing in the area.

  • Revolutionary Front of Cantabria (RFC): It controls a large part of the Cantabrian territory, but not important areas such as Santander and part of its periphery. The result of Asturleonese influences and an unfulfilled autonomy within Castile, it is mainly governed by a charismatic elderly leader and his governing clique. The most radical sectors have been gaining followers in recent years due to the lukewarm government of the territory with Santander, the pan-Castilian incursions, the Basque occupation of the eastern areas and integrist presence.

  • Autonomous Municipalities of RFC: Although under the nominal command of the RFC, the municipalities of the Upper Pas valley are one of the bastions in which the most radical sectors cling, specifically those most related to the concejistas. The attempts by the RFC leadership to achieve a certain energy autonomy have clashed on many occasions with these groups, which in practice have managed to establish control over several municipalities, especially in the mentioned area.

  • Pan-Castilianist Militias: Militias related to Castille, they are the remnants opposed to the truce between the RFC and Castille, seeking the reactivation of the war. They also have a presence in certain disputed areas of León and have helped in the fight against the Catholic County integrists.
  • Catholic County of Castille: Integrist groups belonging to the Party of God. It is suspected that they have moved over time to the area north of Burgos and Palencia, taking advantage of the instability in the area arising from the closure of coal mines and tensions with the RFC. Their intention is to found a “new County of Castile in the lands where it was born, ready to begin a new Reconquista.” Although it originally controlled the entire north of Castilian territory almost up to Burgos, Castille has reduced its territory by creating a corridor along the border with Euskadi to prevent attacks on its railway connection. In the Palencia area, the setback has been the result of a joint action by the pan-Castilian militias, the Castilian army and local warlords.

Other comments on the map

  • La Pernía is out of the original territory claimed by the RFC, but it was incorporated to its control after the “crossing of Piedrasluengas” in 1978. This operation was the one that increased the popularity of the current leader of RFC, who is originally from the territories right to the north.

  • In a similar fashion to the “crossing of Piedrasluengas”, the Autonomous Municipalities of Upper Pas have occupied the valley of Espinosa de los Monteros while fighting the integrists to the south.

  • The areas around Guardo and Barruelo de Santullán are under control of local warlords. These warlords took advantage of the inestabilities after the closure of the coal mines and have collaborated with various factions in the fight against the integrists of the Catholic County.

  • The moorland of La Lora has very small reserves of oil, which have caught the interest of the small factions of the area because of the energetic scarcity.

  • The Trespaderne-Mena Corridor has been reconquered by the Castilian Army from the hands of the Catholic County in order to protect the connection with Euskadi, used for shipping materials and goods.

  • La Robla is where the railway that passes through the coal fields of Palencia ends, being the other end in Bilbao, Euskadi. This railway used to be far more strategically important in the past, losing importance due to the closure of the mines, the instability of the area and the increase of use of roads for commerce.
