Description
A giant spine back snake hunts fish in a pond. The snake gently flicks the water with it's tongue luring the unsuspecting fish, little does the snake know it is being watched as well.I wanted to paint some trees and this happened. Moderately detailed painting, I could take it so much further but would rather start another piece for a bigger folio. I may go back to it in the future, I had thought about adding flowers everywhere.

All together about 6/7 hours.
I mostly painted from dark to light and created a lot of things on separate layers so if I goofed I could delete it. Used brush scattering to create the illusion of a lot of detail then I added little details by hand.
No adjustment layers or special brushes were used. I created this mostly to start applying the things I've learned about color recently.
I put the most details in the focal point and kept the rest loose.

I chose white because all other colors took away from the feeling I wanted. So I thought why not white, if the snake is extremely large and strong then it doesn't really need to hide well.

It is! Is the icon hard to see and understand? I was wondering if it would be unrecognizable to someone unfamiliar with the piece.. the details are a bit tiny.
Perhaps the snake isn't common prey and the cat is just an overzealous hunter looking to sneak up on what it thinks is an easy meal.
I had imagined a scene where the cat sneaks up and pounces, managing to get behind the snakes head, but the snake is so large that it thrashes around wildly in the pond flinging the cat around like a rag doll.
Would be fun to paint that scene with an explosion of water and some blood in the water. Who would be victorious? The cat would still be considerably smaller than the snake.

Thank you. I tried to keep the plants and such /blurry to help bring focus to the center of the piece but enough detail that when looked at it is still interesting.

Thank you. I keep the details simpler, using a brush that scatters (jumps around) and let the color do the work instead of trying to hand draw all the little leaves and such. So selecting a good color and laying it over a darker color was what really helped. Looking at photos can help with color choice.

I forgot to add, about the scattered brush, I then only added little "tips" to some of the leaves to show their shape. You could even make a leaf shape brush and set it to scatter, many people do this, I have yet to try that.

Thank you. I'm glad it blends well, for a while the snake looked like a sticker then I realized I needed some reflections from the water on the under belly and some shadowing from the snake on the water. Learning as I go.
