Description
First I did this serie of drawings for different fantasy book covers. Eventhough the author paid for it, I never got the contract he said he would send it to me and the only thing I got were promises :" don't worry I'll send you the contract soon, in 3 or 4 months"Now it's been one year and since I still haven't gotten it or signed anything, I think it's fair that I show you my work and use it according to my will.

Love the subject and the background/horizon. I like how it gives the impression that Barbarian Guy is tired after a long day of singlehandedly treading the jeweled nations of the earth beneath his sandal'd feet, with the desolation in the background as a direct result. I also like how the sky feels more close and more "real" than the civilization and the surrounding landscape, like the barbarian and the sky are immortal and the setting is transient. I'm probably reading way too much into this, lol.
I think I get what you were trying to do with the shield to show the depth and direction of the perspective, but it feels very out of place to me... it doesn't follow the direction of movement in the picture and there's no sense of how it got there. The heavy perspective that makes the shield look so tiny compared to Barbarian Guy is also not reflected in the perspective on the arrows, which defeats some of the effectiveness of the shield at establishing perspective in the first place. If I were to magic myself back in time and give you a suggestion when you were painting this, I'd suggest omitting the shield entirely and using furrows in the sand from Barbarian Guy's footsteps leading off camera to the viewer's right to provide the same illusion of depth without adding clutter and being hard to draw.
The scabbard looks too short for the sword to fit in.
I like how Barbarian Guy looks like your own unique character, rather than a copy of Frazetta's Conan, despite the obvious similarities between the two.

Sorry to hear about you being dicked around by the author on this great piece. Although speaking from experience, I know how difficult it can be to scare up a dead-tree publication contract with many publishers nowadays. Much of it is going digital to keep the costs down.

I must say I really love that this barbarian actually has some damn scars on his body.
