A few people have asked me about how I do ringlet hair and so I wanted to post this up on here.Sorry it's not that amazing, but it was done quickly for someone else on another site and I didn't really edit it much from there. But it should still help you regardless! ^^
At the top you see the different types of ringlet curls you can do. Be they thick or thin, large or small, tight or loose they all pretty much have one thing in common. They are circular and form "rings" of hair as they fall down, thus the name.
First thing you need to do(after drawing the head of your subject) is block in how poofy you want the ringlets to be. You don't technically have to do this step, but it is VERY easy to get carried away with adding curls later on and this can help you from making your character have a ringlet fro at the end.
Second, I add in loose U/C shapes that are really stretched out that show the thickness of the curls. Basically just how big I want them to be so I know for later.
Next is the fun part but also the part that takes the longest, blocking in each individual curl. Make sure when you start blocking them in that you decide which type of curl to use. If it's loose, make sure you add the piece that curls around in the back to come back in the front, this is VERY important if you're doing loose curls to keep them looking realistic. I usually start with one of the largest curls in the front, and then work on the curls that are resting next to it until the entire head is finished.
And voila! You're done. A head full of ringlet curls. ^^
Also when shading this, please keep in mind that ringlets are well curly. The hair is curved to follow the shape of the curl. So make sure to blend your dark/light colors in a curved motion when you do so. ^^

Exactly.
But your idea with scetching them out first is really good, I'll try that the next time.

*nods* And you can always add a bit more when you're done, but it really does help me keep from going overboard lol
