Description Hardening his will Sam thrust forward again, and halted with a jerk, staggering as if from a blow upon his breast and head. Then, greatly daring, because he could think of nothing else to do, answering a sudden thought that came to him, he drew slowly out the Phial of Galadriel and held it up. Its white light quickened swiftly, and the shadows under the dark arch fled. The monstrous Watchers sat there cold and still, revealed in all their hideous shape. For a moment Sam caught a glitter in the black stones of their eyes, the very malice of which made him quail, but slowly he felt their will waver and crumble into fear.

---------------

This is for all the Samwise fans out there (including me). Done in pencils and edited in Photoshop. It took me about 3-4 hours to complete this. The original size of the paper is 1/2 an A4 sheet.

Technically the Watchers should have three bodies and three heads each, but I didn't read the book while doing this scene so bash me all you like

Great job with the Light from the Phial! Sam's pose is really cool too.

this really is a great pencil work! i like the light of the foreground and the darkness of the background (nice contrast achieved this way); your interpretation of the Watchers is also impressive!

Ok, some little things here and there. If the light is coming from the vial, then the shadows on the wings would be different. It looks like you have the shadows on the highest part of the wing ridges, I will refer to the far right wing. Shouldn't the shadow actually be where the wing dips in(away from Sam), and then the highlight be where it curves back towards him? The same would follow for the next part of the wing, it seems like the shadow and highlight area should be reversed. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Also, unless there is a fairly significant light source behind Sam, or a good deal of reflected light(which it seems like most of the light from the vial would be blocked by his body) then his back should be quite a bit darker. Darkening his back would also add a little bit of a dramatic effect, like he is pretty much surrounded by darkness. Ok, thats enought for this one.

You do have a good grasp on the perspective in your drawings. You've also got a good deal of tone variations, which is very nice.

Very well done. A minor critisism, is that the angle he's holding the sword at isn't perfect to the angle his grip. Admittidly, he could be loosley holding it, but then it would more likely lean the other direction. Done well though.

While I am a big fan of the books, sometimes I think hardcore fans tend to be a bit too harsh & technical about the art. Don't get me wqrong; I don't blame them, since they want to see good wrok and accuracy, but it is refreshing to see variations on the scenes, too. As is, I like this pieceand it shows great versatility & imagination.

clepweb In reply to Ricardofantasyart [2005-12-01 09:33:21 +0000 UTC]

Well I would consider myself closer to a hard-core fan (because when the movies came out and they bungled certain scenes I liked, I started jumping up and down . I'm not so particular about the art because I believe Tolkien would have liked artists to read the book and then interpret the scene the way they saw it. He was a pretty good artist too.

Ricardofantasyart In reply to clepweb [2005-12-01 09:46:59 +0000 UTC]

No problem. It's ok to be hardcore fan. To me, I just consider the LOTR books and films to be closely related, but not 'direct descendants' per se. I read the books years ago, and for the films I was more interested in the visual interpretation of the books, rather than the text. Movies always change the text, or excluded stuff. No matter who did it, a film wpould never please everyone, but I am glad they got made and that Peter Jackson enlisted Alan Lee and John Howe.

As for your art, it shows a wonderful sense of design and detail. I look forward to more.

Thank you for your compliment. Alan Lee and John Howe as far as I know are two of the best Tolkien fan art artists in the world. I saw the Making of FoTR (or one of the LOTR movies) and they showed a lot of concept art there.

Your art is also very nice. I was never good at colouring

Ricardofantasyart In reply to clepweb [2005-12-01 10:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Totally agree! Their work is outstanding and that's why they were perfect for the job, no question about it. The thing about LOTR is that it's such a beautiful, huge, vivid world created by Tolkien that it's simply wonderful to experience in it's many incarnations.

Thanks for the compliments on my work, too. I have a bunch of new fantasy and LOTR-type fantasy pieces in the works, as opposed to high-fantasy. Hope you'll drop in again when I post them...
