But yes these things are half fur and half scales. They come in various appearances. Different pelt(natural colors), ear size, horns, spines, more fur, less fur, etc. Etc. They are as large as a fox and lives in woodland areas.
The also live in groups or packs. There is one leader and deputy. Others in the group will have to participate to survive together. They are carnivores. So they hunt for rodents and birds. Even a fox if they wanted to.
During the winter their pelts will thicken to survive the cold. Even the ones with more scales can develop some tuffs of fur.
Their defense is their horns, spines on their backs, teeth, and claws. The thick whiskers on their face may provide a little protection but they are more flimsy.

Right now I'm currently working on them and trying to come up with a name for these species.
