Description It is a source of quiet satisfaction that my downy woodpecker pair have hatched two chicks this summer. Here is the mother resting very briefly in the mulberry tree, wonderfully close to my lens on a morning without very much light, but just enough to capture the attitude of the tiny bird that is such a delight to me. She is about 6.75 inches tall, if that, and her race is "interior, western". Kansas, 8/4/2013.

A lovely portrait shot of a very lovely mother. The composition in this shot is great, the leaves really add to it, love it.

Thanks, Erin. I'm especially pleased that you like the shot, and that you get the effort behind the composition. Isn't it cool how the toes of her right foot rest on the stem of the leaf? Of course, I love her, her mate and her chicks a lot. I feel very good about giving them a generous supply of food. I feel like their grandfather.
