Description Before somebody freaks out and asks me if I'm okay, yes, I am okay, this is not vent art! This is actually supposed to spread a positive message, just read until the end!

If you're like me, you're an over-correcter who will take the absolute tiniest comment somebody made about you, and amplify it until suddenly you're 100% sure that it's the absolute biggest, most terrible thing about yourself, and you need to fix it right away before more and more people become aware of how [insert something negative here] you are.

In my case, I actually only do this if my parents say something about me. It's funny, because when people hear that somebody is self conscious, they usually shower them with praise about their appearance. But in my case, I actually like my appearance perfectly fine, to the point where I've never worn make-up, etc. Looking like a fashionista just isn't what I worry about, I'm totally okay with having faded purple hair and bags under my eyes. Because to that extent, I like myself.

What I stress about, is--*glances at list*--literally everything else on the planet, with the main thing being school. Friggin school. I got my eye on you, school. But of course, once I started feeling really bad about one thing, it all snowballed into this giant mass of "I feel like I suck at EVERYTHING", because when I didn't fix my attitude in the beginning, it just got worse and worse until I more or less hated myself for awhile there. Eventually (this summer break, when school let out) I started to actually do stuff I like again, which reminded me that there's actually fun stuff to do in life, and I'm not the suckiest person in the world, I just wasn't allowing myself any time to feel good before.

Y'know how Wheatley (from Portal 2) has this freak-out when he gains power, and smashes GlADOS and Chell down into the ground, because he was called an idiot? Yeah, that's basically me, except I don't smash people into the ground. Smashing people isn't very nice.

Well, the reason I drew this/wrote this wasn't so that I could moan and groan about my life, it was actually so that I could encourage other people to not make the same mistake of falling into this mindset. Thinking that you're not trying hard enough no matter what you do, is honestly more mentally harmful than anything. Having a competitive spirit is cool, trying to get better at something is great, but if you're doing it to the point where you are harming yourself mentally, it's time to chill.Β

For me personally, I wasn't able to calm down until quite awhile into this summer break. But I'm already mentally preparing myself for next school-year, because there's just no way that I'm letting myself slip into that Wheatley mindset again. So, I strongly encourage you guys to do the same! Don't fall prey to "I'm not good enough". Remember to actually let yourself relax at the end of the day, after you've studied and all of that boring work stuff. Don't do what I did--which was come home, study my butt off, work on homework for hours, and then be so wound up that I literally didn't watch any TV all school year even though I wanted to, because I felt like I didn't deserve it.

Dear Past Me,

TV is flipping awesome, u were being stoopid.

-Love, You

This is so relatable, the stuff you said in the description too! It is so easy to let yourself and others determined what is not good enough about you and get an unhealthy mindset which is trying to tell you "welp I guess I'm just a fuck up, nothing I can do about it" and then appearing confident when brushing of a bad grade or stuff in public, but feeling g like shit inside.
I too, had that stuff with school. I wasn't really good in the last one, and I never was exactly confident ^^Β°

But now I changed school and things are getting better and I am finally so far to see, that even though I've been thinking that for years, I'm not as bad as I thought I was... And that is really calming ^^

Welp sorry to spamming so much in one comment ^^Β°

Thank you for the spam, I appreciate it! xD I was worried that this comic would receive a negative response, since I don't usually upload anything serious like this. So I'm glad to know that you know what I'm talking about! Although it's probably not good that we've both had this problem.

I've definitely grown better about this. Summer break has given me almost endless time to just unwind and think things over.

School is like: "So we heard you like learning! TIME TO MAKE YOU Β H A T E Β IT." And since school only judges how good you are by how good you are at memorization, if you're sucky at math and thinking in a straight line just in general, you get the feeling that you just aren't good enough. At least, that's how it is at my school. If you aren't on the football team or taking all AP classes, you're basically considered not good enough, sometimes even by fellow students. For instance, I would say: "I have two advanced classes, and I really enjoy them!" But then some passing group of snobby kids would say: "Oh, that's all you have? WE have all SUPER advanced classes!" and me being me, I would think: "Well gee, if they're doing better than me, I must not be trying hard enough!"

But of course, in the long run, having all AP classes doesn't really determine how smart you are, or how far you'll go in life. So next year, you can be sure that I'm not beating myself up over "not being smart/good enough". xD

I'm glad that you're getting better as well! Getting beaten up mentally but trying to act normal on the outside really sucks.

I really don't get you education system to be honest ^^Β° I don't say our's better, but yours just seem so confusing... And you have to pay for college? Da fug?

But yeah stuff getting better and under control is most definitely a good thing ^^

Yeeeah, it's pretty screwed up.Β

You don't have to pay for college??? I've heard of some European countries doing that, that's so awesome! I wish America was that way, because now we have a ton of people who can't afford college. Don't even get me started on private schools (every art school ever) and high-esteemed schools like Harvard and Yale. (When my dad graduated high school he was accepted to a bunch of big schools like Harvard, Yale, etc, but his family didn't have the money for him to attend a great college like that, so he couldn't go. It's like: "Oh, you're smart enough to go to this awesome school!! We need people like you to become doctors and scientists!! Wait, what's that--you aren't super wealthy? HAHA, TOO BAD, I GUESS YOU JUST CAN'T GO EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE ACCEPTED TO MULTIPLE DREAM SCHOOLS.")

Haha, yeah!

SafirasArt In reply to Clockwork-Jack [2017-07-08 08:33:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah we don't have to pay, but if you aren't one of the really good students you get a "warte semester" it's something like "waiting semester" and it means they give you a few years time in which you are not allowed to go to the college you assigned for, but when those years are over you are free to study it.
But yeah we have private schools as well... And they are freaking expensive. And we have a separated school system. Like after the 4. Grade. The classes get separated into 3 different school systems, depending on their grades. If you're a good student you go to the "gymnasium ", if you're average to " realschule" and if you suck you go to the "hauptschule".
You need the longest to graduate from the first school, like ehm... I thing 2-3 years longer than from the realschule. And there is one years between the last too systems.
You can, when you finished the hauptschule,
go to a realschule and graduate there as well.
And if you want you can do the same after that with the gymnasium.

I personally went to a gymnasium but I sucked ass! This system is build on pressure! You get the feeling g no one there cares for you and that you are nothing compared to the good students!
And you start to believe that shit ^^Β° and not only people like me, no my best friend was one if the class bests. But she had several break downs in math class because it was one if the only subjects she failed and the teachers in that subject thought she was a loser.

She also got an eating disorder later, and she's not the only one. Alone in our class and the classes in the same standard, there were 3 other people with eating or other metal disorders. Basically every 3 person there had a problem with their physical health as well. Either the knees, or the back everyone had something they had to take pills for, and the people who didn't were either as bad and accepting if that as I was, or they took drugs and druck.... That system is dangerous and it damages young people!

Solo I left last year ^^ I went down to a realschule we're I will graduate now next year and I noticed; woooow I am not a bad student! Plot twist! I suddenly became class best... That was such a shock for me! I mean for years I was the worst and suddenly :nope you're great??

That was weird ^^Β° sorry again for the spam/rant ^^Β°

Really? That's a really interesting way of handling it. o_o

Wow, that actually seems like a smarter system than what America has in place, in all honesty! In America all of the kids who suck AND all of the average kids/geniuses get smashed together into one classroom. Even if you work hard enough to take advanced classes, there's still kids in those classes who are very obviously not interested in going to college or even getting an education. The whole system changed a couple decades ago so that "No child will be left behind!", which in theory sounds nice, but it completely backfired. Now there are kids IN HIGH SCHOOL (fourteen years old and up) who can barely read, because the teachers are forced to just graduate them into the next grade, even if they don't do any of the work!

I think I'd like your system better. All systems have their flaws, but yours seems to have a better order to it.

Ugh, wow... That's the downside to advanced classes. The teachers tend to assign way more work and expect more of you--which is understandable. But what sucks is when the teachers think: "Hm, she's doing bad in my class, therefore she must SUCK IN ALL CLASSES AND I SHOULD TREAT HER LIKE DIRT--" unless you have a great teacher who can recognize when someone is just struggling to understand the material.

That definitely sounds like a major flaw. But even the American school system, as much of a joke as it is, has tons of kids taking pills for various things, especially anxiety, eating disorders, etc. I myself don't take pills, but school stresses me out so badly that I actually did lose weight and sleep last school year, which isn't good, obviously. xD I think we can all agree that school in general shouldn't be high-pressure to the point that students are being physically effected.

The word 'gymnasium' in English means a gym, or a playground, where people exercise, by the way. xD

Wow, that's great for you though! Not everyone has to be a rocket scientist to be smart!

Yeah your school system does have some advantages, bit the main problem is that those classes get separated when you're ten! And many kinds feel often really down when they get put in the "worst" class cause they think they're not good enough....

Uh shit yeah, I heard of that "no child will be left behind"-thingy, I also heard it increased the amount if test you guy have to take by so much & pressured so many that there are actually teenager break downs. And teachers telling kids the answer cause they get grads for the grads of the students? At least that's what I've heard ^^Β°

Yeah... I can understand, and I don't really hate ours... It's just that'd I like it to me updated ^^Β° ya know?

As if that's the rule???! I mean dafug, just cause you suck in, for example math, doesn't mean you can't be a linguistic genius! What da fuck???

Yeah same. I mean a lot of parents over here let their kids be diagnosed with ADD or stuff, so they can get those meds.... And tbh, my two younger brothers really have it, but on some tests when I was scared to fail mum gave me their meds so I'd be calmer an better concentrated. It did work but... Uh it's kinda weird taking literally drugs for such a stupid invalid thing like school! Ya know?

I know xD we learned that in the 5th grade xD but you guys don't have an other word for it xD but yeah sure all the students in gymnasium study while doing exercises xD duuh!

Yeah ^^Β° gotta admit I was also pretty lazy in my old school sooo yeah ^^Β°

Oh gosh, my reply is late yet again. My inbox is bogged down right now. :'I

Wow, that's really sucky. I guess no school system is perfect. Yours probably should be updated.

Yeeeah, that's basically what happens. We get a lot of tests close together, because in my particular school system our classes only last one semester each, so they try to smash an entire year's worth of material into one semester. There are definitely a lot of teenagers having breakdowns over school--all of my friends do, and myself at times. They just squash all of our work together so drastically that we have to learn at a really awkward rate, and we usually have a bunch of projects to tackle at once--along with general homework and studying and extra credit, etc. Which means there's way less time to actually live life outside of school--especially for those kids who have jobs as well.

Hahahaha, agreed!! For instance, my literature teacher from last year was great, and she would make jokes about how usually people who are great at literature (this was advanced literature), aren't very good at math or science. She completely understood when there were kids in her class who struggled to write essays, but were great at other classes like math. But then in my next semester I got a math teacher who acted like we had no excuse to be better at one thing than another, and would go off on us if we were struggling in math. She didn't help at all, and just screamed at us about how we were personally offending her for not doing well in her class. Breaking News: She was teaching the lowest level of math. I don't know why she expected anybody in there to be flawless.

Mental disorders and related issues are definitely a real thing, and some kids do need help. What bothers me is when the kids are coddled and given so much extra help that they think they can't learn anything on their own. Or when they use ADD or ADHD as an excuse for not trying. I actually had a friend in school who would not do any work, and when I would ask her why she wasn't working, she would say something like: "I have a learning disorder." as if that gave her an excuse to not work at all. Half the time she even understood the material, and just refused to do the work. Then when she learned that she was failing almost all of her classes, she acted upset and said that it was because of her learning disorder, but I knew for a fact that this girl was being given WAY more help than most kids ever get, and she just wasn't doing her work... Ever.Β

If that's what Gymnasium was, I would probably have died years ago.

It's okay ^^ don't worry about it ^^

Yeah ^^ probably

That's sound really fucking messed up....

It's still kinda weird for me that you guys have different classes for the same subject ^^Β° like we have one math class... And if you're on one of the "higher" schools you just get the same stuff as everybody else just faster and later there is different stuff and harder stuff bit it's still the same. The first time we difference between that stuff is in college xD

Yeah I know people like that too....

Yeah same xD

What do you mean you have one math class? Isn't it called something different each year? Like Algebra, Geometry, etc? o_o

Those kids either drop out or learn to actually do their work, so it's all good in the end. xD
