Description I'm testing out a lot of new things in preparation for my next book - using the mapping pen, copics, Google Sketchup and Manga Studio. I used all those things on this page, and slapped a few tones over it (which took longer than it should have...). I had to compress it for DeviantART; normally the tones would appear a little clearer, since the original is at 600dpi. In particular the hatching tone at the top right has compressed in a slightly squicky manner. Well, at least I like how I drew the girl.

The characters are just some random ones I came up with - nothing to do with the next project.

Compiled in Adobe Photoshop CS3.

EDIT: Updated to fix left hand as well as clean up tones.

This is awesome. I don't usually find really good manga pages, but this (and the rest of your stuff [hollow fields]) are really good!

HOLY CRAP!! What is this and why isn't it professional yet? WOW. I keep finding people who can actually use Manga Studio. I'll have to check out those other programs too. I hope you go pro someday, if you haven't already.

She is a professional, she has a manga series in bookstores - "Hollow Fields". I believe this is from her newest series which hasn't been released quite yet.

when u draw in ink and paper, u have to redraw it in the computer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clockwork7 In reply to Hitsuzen182 [2010-01-27 08:09:55 +0000 UTC]

Nope. I scan it in, and adjust the levels in photoshop, which takes about 5 seconds. Then it's ready to go. No redraw.

sorry to butt-in on an old post,  but I just started learning using sketchup (which was also reccomended by a manga artist for architecture/backgrounds ^^) and I want to ask- do you always, like,  print out certain models and traditionally ink them over on a lightbox or do you ever use the certain styles/profiles in sketchup and just paste the view from the program? (I've noticed they have views there in the program, which kinda look cimic-ish, but still may have that 'fake/3d' feeling to them) Basically - is it at all possible to save up time and let the program outline things for you or is it a no,no from a proffessional's point of view, because one still should ink every bit themselves by hand? hope this makes sense U_U

Clockwork7 In reply to unconventionalsenshi [2013-09-12 12:01:37 +0000 UTC]

I export the view as a JPG and draw over it in Manga Studio. There's really no wrong way of going about it. I hope that helps.

Very cool! I've been toying with using 3D models in drawings, but the end results have been quite hideous to say the least (example ). This picture clearly proves that yes, it can work rather wonderfully, so I'm not entirely on the wrong trail. I guess I must try harder.

Clockwork7 In reply to wwwwolf [2009-09-22 01:10:21 +0000 UTC]

It can be tough, particularly if you have hand-drawn elements and 3D elements in the same panel. I think your pic is decent, though.

ok now i'm really curious. How did you use google sketch up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clockwork7 In reply to TravisvanZandt [2009-09-09 01:18:08 +0000 UTC]

Step 1, download for free...FREE!!!! From here --> [link]

The program is released free, so it's legal.

Step 2, look up sketchup tutorials on Youtube. There are four basic ones and a bunch of intermediate ones.

Step 3, ????

Step 4: Profit.

Oh - the program allows you to render out images in 2d. That's how I got lineart from my 3d models that I could drop into my panels.
