After the Empire was formed, Venators were either scrapped, turned into civilian freighters or commandeered by pirates.

In my personal opinion the best ship in Star Wars and the crowning achievement of imperial navy ... If only Grand Moff Odile Vaiken lived to see this beauty. I always wonder why they didn't let them stay in the imperial fleet (Ok I get it, cause Lucasfilm didn't come up with that design in the first 3 movies).
-8 massive cannons
-A ton of other smaller conventional cannons
-That giant beam laser
-4 hangars holding over a 100 fighters
-Extended hangar for ground invasion forces
-Two separate Bridges and shield generators
That is a flying deffinition of a perfect war machine.

Well, the Imperial class Star Destroyers are larger and have much more raw firepower and room for ground troops. Imperial class star destroyers also can hold 48 TIE fighters, 12 TIE bombers, 12 TIE boarding craft, 8 shuttles, 15 troop transports, 5 gunboats, as well as many tanks. The idea of the imperial class is to posses more raw firepower and more ground troops.
Plus Venators were very susceptible to sabotage. Their engine room was poorly-designed where it is a sitting duck to a boarding party or interdependent saboteur. Venators were also fragile, they got blown to hell pretty easily.
Also, association with the Jedi led to the decline of the use of the Venators.
FUNFACT: The Empire actually did keep a few Venators, mostly for cargo ships, although many were turned into TIE fighter carriers. One in particular was used as a flight school for TIE/Imperial pilots.
