When I see this as well as the episodes relating to the cutie mark crusaders (especially the episode Bloom and Gloom), I think of this.
"I am the shadow. The true self..."
Now that I look at it, I think I realize the thing the Cutie Mark Crusaders are going through.
The thing they fear most is that once they gain their cutie marks, they will not be accepted by their family and close friends. Even they fear being abandoned to the point they will never want to show their faces in the world of Equestria ever again. Especially since others like Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are there to either fuel the fear of the Cutie Mark Crusaders staying blank flanks or rant about how much their cutie marks are terrible and how much they'll never obtain more friends than they already have regardless of their skills. This shows for a simple fact that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are more than willing to risk hurting the CMC in any way possible (even in front of their families such as Applejack and Bab Seed, for Applebloom. Rarity for Sweetie Belle, and friends such as Rainbow Dash to Scootaloo) to the point they would be outcast from other ponies for good and even being discorded in the process. This can come back to bite those two fillies soon enough.
But hey, there a solution to this all.
The only way they'll be free from their worries about gaining their cutie marks, the outcome and how other ponies would feel about them is that they have to face themselves head on and accept who they are and what they're truly capable of the most. (Such as Applebloom growing plants and apples, Sweetie Belle's singing and possible design/fashion sense, and Scootaloo's creation in scootgers.) it's the only way they'll let go of the past and show the ponies of Equestria that they can truly take any challenge they face. Starting by standing up against Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Their group may be disbanded for good. The club of the Cutie Mark Crusaders may not around forever. But this could start the beginning of something new for the young fillies and they can go through this experience together.
As far as I can see, Princess Luna may continue be there to see that they have accepted their skills, talents, and capabilities and they have finally faced themselves. It's very noble but I hope to see them gain their cutie marks at last this season or at least the next season.

You started out more simple in style, became more complex in your drawings, but still kept your simplistic style here and there!

And I have to say, now that I looked at your picture here again to answer your comment, I can even see similarities to how AssasinMonkey draws his ponies. You're not completely there yet, but it certainly looks like you're on the way.
Oh, and I just recognized the fluffy ears you drew for them. Looks cute and makes me wanna nibble on them. xD And I want to bury my face into that chest fur of them. <3

Applebloom is sitting there during the day, Scootaloo during sunset and Sweetie Belle at night. Is there a special symbolism with this?
