Description Yeahhh the color on this one is horrible. I'm sorry. I'll try to scan it at some point and update the file. Ugh. It's SO much better in person. I swearz.

Mom made a comment asking if she was going to get a big version....so I decided to try it xD He's on full-size paper, the last one was small because it's in my bitty sketcbhook. Anyhoo. Wavy Fresian manes are ridiculous and I think I will just never do one again ever. I don't really know how to shade them and in hindsight I really should have looked at one, but for some reason my brain was like "Hey, let's wing it! That always works! Yaaaaay!"
Yeahhh, no. Don't do that.

Anyway. Just another pencilhorse. Looked a bunch of ponies for references but ended up just going with my own thing instead.

Art is mine. Yay.

This is beautiful. And that mane may have been a pain to draw, but it is looking very nice indeedy. And that eye! I do love that eye.

Hi from team 16!

I quite like this picture. You captured the physical structure of a horse head well; viewers can appreciate the majestic beauty found there. I especially like the defined nostrils and planes of the face. Looking at references is always a good idea, but your "own thing" was quite successful as well!

Now, you mentioned in your comment about the colors. I have to agree with you. The discoloration distracts from the piece. It makes it difficult to tell details apart. Why not repost and present it in the best light you can?

The shadows work fairly well throughout the entire piece, though I think you can be bolder with the planes on the face. However, the shadows fall short in the hair. On the top part of the head, when the hair starts to fall in pieces, it is too abrupt. There is no indication of where the hair is coming from. Perhaps add some shadows at the top of the head to show that hair is sprouting out of there, make the lines more curved.

The hair itself needs more contrast. The technique can be improved to do this. One thing to remember is that a strand of hair is actually "negative space". Black lines aren't used to define the strands themselves, but rather the shadows. A great way to define hair is to cut sharp edges onto an eraser and use it like a pencil.

I hope you found my critique useful! You are fantastic with drawing horses. Keep it up!

Thank you very much

Ugh, yes, it looks fairly horrible doesn't it? I do plan on reposting it but haven't had time. I'm hoping my scanner will do a better job than my cell phone. >.>

Thanks a lot for the shadow/hair ideas...for some reason I have a hard time figuring out how to shade hair. I've noticed on a lot of traditional pieces, people will draw in all the hair and then erase for highlights, but I generally end up smudging the crap out of things when I do that, so I haven't really found a happy medium. But this one most definitely needed more shadows in the hair and re-working with the shape.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the time you took! I think you're the only person who looked at this one Thank you!

You're welcome, I hope you found it useful!
It's okay, just post again

I read into that technique--was surprised what I came up with! They recommend taking a firm eraser and cutting sharp edges away (with an exacto knife or other edge)
That helps get rid of the smudging.

Great job!

If this is a horrible scan, it must be reallyy impressive, I love how you did the shading and the contrast

Why thank you! It really is an awful picture unfortunately...I still haven't had time to scan it properly. If that will even work. Anyway, thank you!

Fffffuuu it looks like yarn to me D: I knew it was a bad idea when I started it but once you draw a squiggly line it will never go away. Thanks though!

Thanks a lot! I'm trying to go darker with the shadows, but they are scary.

Thank youuu ^^

Yeah shadows can be really tricky. I mean, if you decide to add a few more then you might think that it wasn't a good idea after all.

But you obviously don't have to worry about that

Exactly. I just get hung up on "But it looks ok now, if I touch it, it might explode!" It's kinda fun to play with contrast though...

Thanks!
