Meet Rohan, the poster-stallion for the breed I'm going to be creating. Oh yeah, that's happening.
He's a big boy with a bit of a control problem but hey...at least he knows where he's going in life! I'll be posting more of the breed soon and no, they aren't fallen angels. You'll have to wait and see. I'm leaving a lot of it blank so I don't give too much away 
I had a lot of fun coming up with these guys and *Mirackles is going to be co-founder whether she likes it or not--so if you're interested keep an eye out for the upcoming group goodness. Basic information is as follows...

Thank you! I need to set him up a real ref sheet soon without all those shiny gold bits xD I'm really excited about them. I suppose if you think about it they aren't super unique just by themselves but I tried to put a fun twist on the point-system and mutations.

oh gosh this looks so lovely <33 i love the subtle purple tints you've used to shade his brown coat! it adds a lot of depth and life to him! (also jsyk in genetics the capital letter goes before the lowercase letter, and he also needs the dun gene in otder to be grullo. so it would be Tt, and he'd either be Dd or DD. c: )

it's okay, genetics are tough! and popular groups like the Nordanners do their genetics wrong so everyone learns incorrect genetics from them

okie dokie! Nordanners get most of the natural horse colors right, so it wouldn't be too bad to look at them for actual horse colors. Mostly their mutations just have impossible rules of inheritance (like how heterozygous Pwl horses can't pass on their gene to offspring, which is not how allele inheritance works) which results ultimately in some of their problems like the Pwl gene being bred essentially to the point of extinction without inbreeding.

Let's say we've got a gene called "p" that makes your horse pink. :3
If it's dominant, the horse will express the gene ("be pink") whether he's got one or two copies of the gene or just one (Pp OR PP). If it's recessive, the gene will only be expressed if he has two copies (pp). Recessive genes always have lowercase letters, dominant are uppercase. c: Since the genes are made-up, you decide if you want your gene to be dominant or recessive. "Recessive" doesn't necessarily mean "rare" either-- chestnut is a recessive gene and it's the most common horse color! Let's pretend like P is dominant. c:
So inheritance-wise, you have to do a wee bit of probability (aka MAFFS 
Homozygous (PP or pp, get it, they're 'homos' because they have two of the same gene and homo people are two people of the same gender dating...? ok that's lame BUT IT'S HOW I REMEMBER IT ANYWAYS
Now things get a little tricky when you have heterozygous parents. If the mom is Pp, and the dad is also Pp, the baby could possibly inherit a P OR a p from either parent! so any baby genotype is possible-- the baby could be Pp, with the big P from mom, Pp with the big P from dad, PP, OR pp.
Basically, if you were say breeding together a Pp mom and a Pp dad and wanted to "realistically" decide if the baby should inherit the P-gene or not, flip a coin for the mom. Heads, the baby gets big P from mom, tails it gets little p. Then flip a coin again for Dad. c:
So the problem with Nordanners is that heterozygous nPwl horses can't pass on their gene, when IRL a heterozygous nPwl horse would pass on its gene 50% of the time-- this means Nordanners are cutting out half of their gene inheritance! D: which explains why Pwl is going extinct. If the chick in charge of Nordanner genetics wanted the mutation to stay rare, I would suggest a better idea would have been to make it recessive instead of dominant, or to make it be linked to another rare gene so a horse would have to randomly inherit TWO rare genes (but that's getting into gene linkage and chromosome length and stuff that's a bit more complicated than your average Googler's grasp so i will digress now 
tl;dr Allele inheritance is always RANDOM!! tell me if i need to clarify anything!

To make this...easier on myself, and so I don't have to come back here and read this comment every time I gotta do something...I'm trying to think of a way to simplify it without going the Nordie route and having to always design new mutations to keep up (if it ever gets to that xD) Dom x Dom = Dominant, Recessive x Recessive = Random?

yep, except recessive means "no mutation", i.e. pp. So recessive x recessive = no mutation. I think you have it right but "heterozygous" is the word you're looking for. Dom x dom = dom. Recessive (no mutation) x recessive (no mutation) = recessive (no mutation). Heterozygous x heterozygous = random. :3
Technically you have a 25% chance of dom, 25% chance of no mutation/recessive, and a 50% chance of heterozygous. But you could simplify it to equal chances of each if you wanted.

He was a bit of a pain in the butt to draw but once I figured out his colors it wasn't so bad. He's probably not supposed to be that golden color but hell, I like it. I'll give him an official reference sheet at some point so he's not so intimidating.
