They totally should have Kept this design instead of the whole Blow-fish thing.

At least Spike gave Twilight the strongest moral support of any of her friends. He felt like a little mentor at times.
If I had seen Seasons 6 and 7 beforehand, I would have realized that Spike really had been made into a proper ambassador of friendship. He is so much more grown up than he was in earlier seasons.
But, yes β that momentary reversion to butt-monkey status is annoying. One other such moment was when Capper was using him as a blowtorch, though that might have been funnier.

Honestly, the way I viewed it was they made him a puffer fish because it would've been funnier for the kids. The scene was filled with wonder and amazement, so they probably made him into a puffer fish as a mood whiplash joke. That's just the way I view it.

You maybe right, but I'm getting tired of spike always being the joke character. We already have Pinkie Pie for that.

I know, I'm a bit tired of it myself. But at least it wasn't the whole movie, and unlike Equestria Girls (where we see Diamond Dogs, and other dragons as humans) this at least has an excuse since the pearl of transformation seems to effect different species in a unique way.
Like how Hippogriff seaponies have qualities usual underwater species have, and Equestrian Seaponies have more pony attributes to them

I agree. First he became a dog in equestria girls and then in the movie he's a fish.

At first, I thought his being a dog made Spike feel too much like a pet. But now I appreciate that it made him much more attractive as a toy. It is one of the most adorable and creative doggy designs.
At least the EG movies showed Spike at his best, as I recall.
