TW: bullying, depression, knife attack, attempted suicide, homophobia

The following story and characters are in an alternate universe that is more similar to the real world than Equestria. This includes dark themes.

In Phoenix, Arizona, Kaleb and Phillip met on a playground when they were barely just out of toddlerhood. Kaleb was a shy boy playing in the sandbox when Phillip came up to introduce himself. Phillip quickly declared Kaleb his friend and though Kaleb was hesitant at first, Phillip’s kindness and earnestness win him over. They become playmates with Phillip’s parents using Kaleb’s parents as free babysitting. Kaleb and Phillip’s bond deepens throughout the years and they are inseparable.

Once they are about 10 years old things darken. Bullies at school start targeting Kaleb for being smart and a dancer. Phillip does his best to stop it but he’s just one colt and eventually Kaleb’s resolve wears down and he develops severe depression. Desperate to end the torment, Phillip finds himself in hoof fights started by the bullies. But one day in March when they are 11 years old a particularly menacing colt bully sneaks in a knife to school. When Phillip tries to defend Kaleb that day he is brutally stabbed.

Phillip gets rushed to the hospital and has to undergo surgery. Kaleb hears rumors that day at school that Phillip is dead. He gets home and tries to contact Phillip but cannot because Phillip’s parents refuse him. Kaleb spirals into blame and guilt and the depression gets him to attempt suicide. Phillip bargains with his parents to finally call Kaleb’s home, saying he’s okay. Kaleb’s father goes to tell Kaleb the news and interrupts the suicide attempt before it harms Kaleb.

Kaleb’s family rents out their place in Phoenix and move temporarily to Virginia. There Kaleb gets treatment for depression. Kaleb and Phillip write each other letters but Phillip’s parents forbid the two from meeting up. Eventually Kaleb recovers enough that he convinces his parents to move back to Phoenix. Kaleb returns that summer when they are 14. Still forbidden by his parents to see Kaleb, Phillip sneaks out on Independence Day to see Kaleb again. They end up kissing that night and both gain their cutie marks while watching fireworks.

Before school starts again in autumn, Kaleb’s parents convince Phillip’s parents to let Phillip hang out with Kaleb. The point that does it is Kaleb always helped Phillip with school work and Phillip’s grades have been slipping since Kaleb left. Because Phillip’s parents are barely approving of the two boys hanging out together as just friends, Phillip and Kaleb must keep their burgeoning romance secret from the public. Only Kaleb’s parents know.

Phillip and Kaleb join after school sports which they excel at. When asked why he practically lives at the same house as Kaleb the answer is “he tutors me”. No one argues because it is actually true. Kaleb is better at schoolwork and helps Phillip learn. That November Phillip is forced by his parents to learn “proper” dancing. He had to dance with so many girls which he does not enjoy. Phillip convinces Kaleb to be his practice dance partner instead and they practice in Kaleb’s home.

Near the end of senior year, the final school year of standard education, Phillip says he’s sad because he has to go to prom. “My parents said I have to go to prom, they expect me to have a date too. And we all know they mean a girl.” Phillip tears up and Kaleb knows he’s really hurt. Kaleb sees to it that they form a plan to get to go to prom together and have at least one dance.

At prom “Don’t Stop Me Now” starts to play Phillip and Kaleb dance in a spotlight. At the end Kaleb throws caution to the winds as he closes the distance between them. Phillip doesn’t miss a beat, he kisses Kaleb back. There are catcalls and applause and gasps, but Kaleb doesn’t hear it, he couldn’t hear anything outside their own dance this whole time. The spotlight cuts off, and darkness returns. “It’s a Kind of Magic” plays. And time falls back into place.

The next morning, Phillip gets some things from his parent’s house and tells his mother he’s leaving. Phillip and Kaleb move away from home.
