he looks so sad at the fact he's dead,
But here's what I think happened... During an akuma attack, Hock Moth appeared and went to end Ladybug so he can take her earrings, but Chat came in and took the death blow to save her, Hock Moth vanished and Ladybug tried to save his life but failed as she believed it to be her fault for not being strong enough.
Chat became a spirit and watched over his friends and Ladybug, when he saw Marinette transform he still watched over her as his father claimed Adrien missing since Chat's body vanished in Ladybug's arms
