Description
Here's my Leonard. My big, sweet...hungry ratty boy. I'm still taking donations/commissions. Well, I am adding to the waiting list, per se.For newcomers to me/my art.
Leonard is my rat, he has a bad case of Bumblefoot, [google it, please] and so I am raising money to pay for a surgery to take care of it, and also to neuter him.
I appreciate the help everyone. Leonard does too. <3

um...bumblefoot shouldn't need surgery to fix. have you tried soaking his paws in epsom salt and have your vet put him on antibiotics?? how old is he? and what kind of cage do you have him in? (wire bottom cages are a no-no...too hard on rattie feet)
also...neutering a rat is very stressful, so unless it's absolutely necessary, i wouldn't hazard it, especially if he's older. (the only time i neutered a rat, it was because i was trying to bond him to another boy and they were fighting nonstop, despite my efforts. if it's just a 'ee' issue, i'd just find ways of dealing with it.)

I have no problems with him peeing, or marking as he walks. I would never think about neutering him for something like that, it's not a big deal.
The reasons why I am thinking about surgery is because it's very big, and looks painful.
He does have a wire cage, but I covered the floors with fleecy fabrics.
As for the neutering, he's very aggressive towards other animals, and I was thinking about introducing him to a female rat instead of a male. Since I believe he'd welcome that before another male.
Unless I can find an already spayed female rat, [since it's better for them] I just plan on neutering him while under the knife for the Bumblefoot.
I have already discussed my plans with some of my friends from a rat forum I am on.
They're done it, and their rats were fine. Leonard should be no different.
I will talk more with my vet about it though.

ah, that's good...you wouldn't imagine how many people get upset about the peeing thing and want to neuter them for that. xwx;
hm, is it padded enough that he wouldn't be feeling the wires thru the material? i'd put something solid like cardboard under the material...but then, that's a lot of effort, especially since everything gets dirty, which was my reasoning to switch to a plastic bottom cage for my boys years ago. but of course, that's up to you. =3
as for introducing other rats, i presume you know about/have tried bathing and masking scent with something like pure vanilla or peppermint extract? that worked for me once...and your local humane society or shelter might have some ratties who need good homes ^w^ we occasionally get some at ours.
with surgery, it really depends on the rat's age...if he's fairly young (and healthy), he should be fine, but if he's over 1 and a half years, i personally wouldn't risk it...even if he makes it thru surgery, the stress of it might get him later. it would definitely age him. (one of my boys became quite frail after his tumor removal surgery and he was only 1 and a half at the time)
anyways, good luck to you and to Leonard too. ^w^ i hope all goes well. (and sorry if i put you on the defensive here -kinda sounds like it- it's just that i've had ratties for years and couldn't resist commenting...especially since surgery for bumblefoot sounds quite drastic owo; )

Haha, no no. I would never alter an animal for my own benefits. And thinking more on it, if I can just find a female that's already spayed maybe I can get him that, rather than neutering him. It's better for the girlies anyway.
It's not as padded as I'd like, but I do plan on switching him to a different cage.
I have a Marshall's Mini Mansion that's currently unoccupied. So I'll likely get some custom fabrics for that after he visits the vet.
I already know the methods for introducing ratties. The forum I'm on discusses it quite often.
Also, Leonard himself was adopted. He was the last ratty left in the group he was in and he was sick and i fell in love.
No worries, I appreciate the input.

well, that's a relief to hear! you get a
ah, that's good (about the introductions) and i'm glad to hear you're on a forum too...that's one of the best ways to get support for exotic pets. (it still seems strange to call ratties 'exotic' in my mind *lol*)
oh, that's so wonderful! ^w^ adoption is one of the best ways to go about finding ratties (they need the love so much!)...and you get a for taking him when he was sick! my very first rattie was sick...he was from a petshop and i knew if i didn't adopt him, the staff would just put him in a backroom and let him die or send him back to the breeder...poor thing! but all he needed were some antibiotics for myco and he was fine!! the most loving lil' guy i ever met...i'll never forget him. =3
in that case, you are most welcome! ^w^
