They are common in Kentucky for about two months out of the year. Two weeks are the peak period when they are plentiful depending on where you are in the mountains. They do not grow near urban areas...

It is been five years since I have had the pleasure of eating extra virgin olive oil (Italian) fried morrels (Kentucky). The Fish of the Forest, we call them, because they taste like fresh water river fish when properly cooked. Exquisite, indeed.

I have never seen them for sale. They are only out for two weeks. Conditions have to be just right. In Tennessee, they are practically nonexistent. In Kentucky, they are much more common, usually in deep woods near a stream. They like to grow on the sunny side of the creek.
These were incredibly yummy. Of all the things I miss about Kentucky, these delectable mushrooms would be on the top of the list.
