Description One of my favorite comics of my youth was Marvel's "Power Pack". Back in my day, dear youngsters, the Power Pack were not the anime looking tykes they are today, teaming up with every Marvel Superhero under the sun (short of Batroc the Leaper). They used to have their own adventures, written and drawn by Mary Louise and Walter Simonson (if memory serves me correctly).

The concept of a group of siblings fighting numerous evils in the Marvel Universe has always struck me as extra chunky cool. It's a huge and scary place and the prospects for adventure are endless.

If I could write and draw Power Pack (a dream job for me), I'd do the comic much like "Opey the Warhead". There would be a lot of humor, but a lot of darker, more serious things, too. While the world to a kid is seen through much simpler eyes than that of an adult, all of the same evils and dangers of the world still exist no matter how a child views them. How these four kids---Gee, Energizer, Mass Master, and Lightspeed---would fight or triumph over those evils in a universe made for bigger, tougher heroes, well, that would be something I'd love to see.

I remember reading the 1980's era Power Pack.

The thing I liked about the way it was written, the Powers children were not Superhero Children.  They were Children who had Superpowers.

I have younger siblings & I could relate to how they acted.  I remember one time they had met up with Cloak & Dagger.  While the older kids were trying to figure out what to do, Katie was swinging around something in a circle & calling out to Dagger "Look at me! Watch what I can do!" or something like that.  No, she wasn't using superpowers, Katie was just swing around in a circle.  Something I have seen 5-6 year olds do.  The way Katie would go on about her favorite cartoon show or the way Jack (one of the middle children) would be getting into trouble & arguing with his siblings or pick on Katie.  I could relate to Alex trying to be the responsible oldest child while still being a child himself.  I could relate to Julie, wanting to read all the time, especially fantasy books.

The newest version, while fun to read, is definately the Saturday Morning Cartoon version of them.  The original run was the best version.

Oh, & if you think it is just a cute kids comic listen to this.  One of the original comics had a plot line where one of the Morlocks was sad over losing her children.  She manipulated the Power's parents into forgetting they had kids & tried to take the Powers kids as her own.  As a child & later as an adult I find that issue to be one of the most terrifying & heart wrenching comics I have ever read.

Agreed; the characterisation of the Power kids was the real gold in the original Power Pack and made them appeal to me (I was in my mid-teens at the time of the start of the first run).

This is an amazing bit of work. I wish Marvel would bring back the original power pack so badly...

I think your description is a pure bullseye on describing the magic of the original Power Pack.  The comic depicted believable children in an adult world that was quite unfriendly.  The Marvel universe can be an unkind universe and here you had these kids trying to grow up in it.  "Power Pack" was very much accessible to children but, as you perceived at the time, did not talk down to them.  Great stuff.

You know, it's drawing faces that I enjoy doing the most. I'm not sure why.

You honestly get the most (grasping for words
here) Feel (?) out of faces. They honestly will
make or break a piece. I hate em' personally,
that's why I always use "googly eyes" hint of
humor in the image makes it just a little more
interesting.

Thanks, Trevor. I'm actually thinking of putting together a Power Pack submission to Marvel. Haven't got any good rejection letters in a while, and, if anything, it can help me home in on my weaknesses as an artist.

Oh! Also, I got the comics on Friday.

Thank you so much for signing them! I greatly enjoyed all the extras you put in and of course I've read my copy about a dozen times (so many little details here and there).

I did a small review in my latest journal.

Thanks again!

Lol... Dream comic book I'd write for would probably be the long-forgotten "Wally the Wizard" or "Howard the Duck"... Though I'd probably suck at HTD cause I'm not the late Steve Gerber, and thus would be doomed to fail.

"Wally the Wizard!" I forgot about that comic, until you mentioned it. Ah, yes, those are good memories.

battybuddy In reply to cluedog [2009-01-26 17:45:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Wally the Wizard was my favorite original comic(as opposed to the ones that were based on previous cartoon characters, like Muppet Babies, Alf, and even Spiderham) to come out of Star comics.
I never got to read Planet Terry, so I'm not sure if I would have liked him better...

I have only one POWER PACK comic in my possession. It is the one where it is about Child Abusers, featuring Spiderman. You find out that a younger Peter Parker went over to the nice neighbor's house, the man showed Peter some porn and asked him if it turned him on. I assume Uncle Ben kicked the $#!+ out of that guy, but Spidey tells the PP about this. Some bizzare stuff.

I think you could do a kickass job on Power Pack.

GO FOR IT ZAC!!!

I really need to get my hands on old issues of that comic. It's been a while since I've read them.

Thanks for the support. I have been thinking about sending Marvel a PP submission, but they'd laugh at my artwork. Still, I can dream, can't I?

LarryKingUndead In reply to cluedog [2009-01-26 01:18:11 +0000 UTC]

I wish they would release it in a Essential collection, cheap and in B&W.

Why don't you try sending them a PP submission? It is worth a shot. I'd rather pick up your stuff, seeing that you would go all retro, and not make it lame by trying to drag it into the future.

marvel spoiled a good group in the main universe :/
