You can do whatever you would like with them.
trading/reselling is okay. But unless you have extra art for said adopt please don't sell them for more than what you paid for them.
Once you get the adopt you can change the gender, give them a name, personality, use them in RP's, stories, comics, whatever you would like. (You can even use them for commercial use like publishing stories and what not too.)
