Description
Jemez Falls campgrounds, Santa Fe Nat'l Forest, NMFULL VIEW
Vespula is a small genus of social wasps, widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Along with members of their sister genus Dolichovespula, they are collectively known by the common name yellowjackets (or yellow-jackets) in North America. Vespula species have a shorter oculo-malar space (shown in the figure below) and a more pronounced tendency to nest underground than Dolichovespula.
these yellow jackets are terrifying enough to be in a wild animal category
i'd rather have humming birds to photograph

I love this. The focus is SLIGHTLY fuzzy but its a lovely shot. And Id imagine, a slightly dangerous one. In my experience, wasps and hornet type things are way more aggressive and testy than bees. So glad you made it out alive with this!

I can't help myself shivering as I look at this photo. Just to think how nasty it would be to put your face in that hole... :s

Invertebrates is the correct category...If you go here and look in the sidebar for APN gallery descriptions you can find the correct place to put anything in the nature gallery gallery[link]
"* Invertebrates- Photographs of live Insects, Arachnids, Gastropods, Mollusc's, Butterflies and Dragonflies."
You can also check gallery descriptions during the uploading process just before you choose them.
And yes...yellow jackets can be nasty

No problem. I watched put a lot of effort into revising the categories to make them easier, and adding gallery descriptions so that people would know that insects are Invertebrates. He's stepped down as APN gallery director now, but he deserves a lot of credit.

he does indeed
however, insects are so varied - why not a category called insects, no?

There was long, long debate... but basically if you started doing that...technically spiders aren't insects, nor are scorpions they would have been dealing with more miscats... Invertebrates is the correct biological term that covers all those creepy crawlies and gives a better home to slugs and snails as well.
