Obstacle Course III: Backstage Insight 2

The second stage of the course took place in the mountains, with the specatators set to watch from across the valley (it wasn't safe to haev them any closer). For closer viewing, the contestants were displayed on multiple large screens for a closer look at the action.

The course itself was simple - a run of just shy of a kilometer along a mountain path with steep slopes on either side. Only that it was completely littered with hundreds of thousands of marbles. Any deviation from the path resulted in large time penalties that would ultimately cost any contestant the race.

Melanie led the pack as the winner of the last stage, but immediately began slipping as soon as she stepped out of the gate. Her ankles twisted violently multiple times, and almost immediately she began limping and hobbling along the course. The other three behnd her noticed this, and collectively decided that perhaps the best course of action would be to let her lead until her ankles gave out.

The race plodded along slowly for quite some time, much to the disappointment of the audience. However around the last 50 meters or so, the action picked up. As expected, Melanie's ankles continued to twist again and again under their weakened state until her left leg completely buckled and she fell backwards - hard. Of course with her injured wrists, she made no effort to brace the fall and her neck snapped back painfully. This was in for her, and she lay on the track moaning in pain.

Jo, seeing an opportunity decided to rush ahead - at least as fast as she could on her likely fractured ankle. She pushed past the other racers with a burst of speed. jowever her sudden decision to abandon caution caused her to slip forwards and faceplant in to the side of the track, knocking her unconcious.

Pascale also tried to create an opportunity but the marbles gave her no traction. She slipped directly backwards and hit the rocky ground with a hard thud. Unlike Melanie, all of her weight was transferred to her arms and the pain made her see stars.

Unfortunately for Francesca, Pascale had slipped right as the two of them were fighting for position on the track. As Pascale went down it caused a moment of panic for Francesa as there was nowhere to go other than a hard bail on the ground like the others. In a split second decision she decided to jump aside, but in doing so lost her balance. Instead of jumping around the pile of injured women lying on the ground, she tumbled aimlessly down the hillside coming to a crumpled pile at the bottom.

Pascale was the first to come to her senses. Although her arms and shoulders hurt like hell, she managed to struggle to her feet and stagger across the finish line. Shortly behind her was Jo, still dazed for her fall and limping to a second place finish holding her neck and wincing. Melanie eventually followed, dragging herself along, not chancing any more damage to her already ruined legs. Francesca was automatically slotted to last place, having been carted on a stretcher back to the staging area for the next round.
