“Just remember, that pogo stick is probably going to kick like a mule”, Kimberly said. It was a first generation test product, and in her experience those always came with particular challenges.

“Got it,” said Jennifer with her usual cheery upbeat tone, “like a mule!”

Jennifer was the summer intern at ProTest Industries. Fresh out of university with a degree in quality management, it was supposed to be her job to run the analysis on new products and determine their market readiness. That was of course, until their lead tester Kimberly broke her back and neck leaving the company to scramble for an alternative. The decision was to get Jennifer involved on the ‘ground floor’ of the company, after all that would give her a whole new perspective on her future work. That seemed logical, save for one thing: Jennifer was a clutz. In fact, she had already managed to sprain her wrist just by pulling a door open to fast in an attempt to catch it for a co-worker.

“Alright, whenever you are ready just hop on the stick and jump like you normally would” Kimberly said, “just be ready for the propellant to kick in, that should happen on the upward bounce automatically”. This really should be me on there, she thought, the kid just isn’t ready for this! But the dull ache in her spine and the throb coming from her recently sprained ankle argued otherwise. If only I could see my feet, Kimberly thought, I wouldn’t have rolled my ankle! Thinking about it made her reach for her ankle instinctively, she massaged it with a wince.

“OWWWW!” a cry from Jennifer snapped Kimberly back to reality. She looked over to see Jennifer crumpled on the track, curled in a ball grabbing her left ankle.

“What happened?” Kimberly asked. “It kicked.. like a MULE!” Jennifer cried, “My ankle, I rolled my ankle really badly!!”

Great start.. Kimberly thought to herself as she limped over to try to help her new intern, great start indeed.
