I loved that scene. I mean, yes, it may be a shoddy way to treat Cap's shield, but without it, I imagine things would have asploded.
Look at it this way, people-who-boo-in-theaters, even before getting thawed out, Captain America is saving Tony's life.

No, he'd do sad puppy eyes for a while, moping around until Tony volunteered to fix it.
Then he'd stand behind him with his arms crossed the whole time, and Tony would realize all the pouting was just some master manipulation.
