OK allow me to explain.Cobalt was supposed to be just a regular, boring pegasus. However, I have an unspoken agreement with some of my close friends that if we have original characters based on the same or similar universes, we must pit them against each other in battle. My foes were Shadow Sword and Swift Nightly, who were designed to be ridiculously overpowered. In order to give Cobalt a fighting chance, I gave him this, complete with a whole back story.

As I recall, Shadow Sword "nearly destroyed Equestria", and it took both Celestia and Luna to defeat him. That implies that only somepony who's as powerful as both of them combined could stand a chance against him. Sounds pretty overpowered to me.

That's because he went insane and tapped into power he didn't even know he had because he was racked with so much anger and sadness that he wanted to end everything, but since his defeat (and recent return to sanity) he is back to his original power, not overpowered.

So it's a plot convenience? Since it's purely based on emotion, he has the potential to 'tap' into the power that nearly destroyed Equestria at any point. All he has to do is feel a certain way and it'll awaken. And even without his 'hidden powers', his wind cutters can cut through ANYTHING. That's a one-hit-KO regardless of who you are right there, and no way to guard against them.

Plot convienence, yes, but I'll explain more of that later, and its not that they can cut THROUGH anything, just that they can cut or harm anything, but not necessarily go all the through something.
